Netflix Email Scamming

Just recently, numerous emails have been sent out by an unknown scammer pretending to be the Netflix company. To attract the reader's attention, the fraudulent website requests that customers update their Netflix membership information. The questionnaire asks for all of your credit card information and social security number. All of the emails sent out look completely legitimate. Once you have provided your personal information, you are taken back to the normal Netflix homepage. Netflix explains they will never ask for any personal information in the context of an email, and they have created a section on their website about how to protect yourself from scammers. Everyone is asked to spread the news about the issue to protect others about the scams.

Questions:

What would you do if you got this email?

Would you even consider sending out your personal information over an email?

My Answers~

If I had not known about this scam, I would have most likely opened it. However, I wouldn't have put in my personal information (or my mom's) in the email because I know you should never enter credit card information or social security online. Although I would probably not delete the email, just in case I did need it.

I wouldn't send out personal information (or my family's) through a website. I would always ask my mom first and make sure it is completely credible.

  • Great job Justina!

  • If I got this email, I would most likely think it is legit. I understand the credit card information part, but if they asked for my social security number I would be alarmed and not give them that information. From there, I would just assume that it isn't really Netflix and that is it a fraud. I would never send me personal information over an email because that can easily get leaked out to other people just by clicking on the "send" or forward" option.

    • It's kind of strange when you send someone an email, they could just easily forward it and the sender would never know. Credit card information is obviously needed for a Netflix account, so I completely understand why you would begin to fill out the information.

  • I don't think I would have opened an email like this. I would have been a little suspicious about something like that if i had received such a weird email. I'm sure that a company like Netflix would never ask about my personal information and my credit card data etc via an email, so even if I had opened that email i wouldn't have given out anything about my personal data online

    • How would you know if it wasn't legit if you didn't open it? Since you need your credit card information to pay for Netflix, I don't know if I would be completely suspicious from the very beginning, but it is strange that is through an email.

  • I would have opened it but once I saw what they were asking for I would have just deleted the email. I would never send personal information in an email. Anybody could get a hold of it then that would end very badly.

  • I would never reply to the Email and delete it right away. It is never smart to to just give out your personal infromation by an email because its so easy these days to look up someones email and create a fake website. Also, I would never consider sending out my social security number by Email.

  • I would probably delete it. I would never send my personal information over email.

  • I would just delete and get rid of it right away. Even if it is something from Netflix I need I would just get rid of it so I don't run the risk of putting my information out there for them to take. No I would send out information unless I was completely confident that I was sending it to a trusted source somewhere.

    • How would you be completely sure if it was legitimate? I think it would be really hard to tell with all of these sneaky people these days. In this generation is very hard to trust anyone.
