Neolithic Chewing Gum Helps Recreate Image of Old Person

Nearly 6,000 years, A women in southern Denmark spit out her gum in a shallow lagoon. Researchers found the piece of gum among other things during an excavation. With the gum they were able to reassemble her complete DNA. With the DNA they were able to paint a picture of what she could've possibly looked like. With the DNA they found that she was a hunter-gatherer from Europe. The DNA also suggest that she had dark skin, dark hair and she had blue eyes. According to the researchers she was alive nearly 5,600 years ago and she lived near a lagoon.

Would you pick up a random piece of gum off the streets, to figure out who it belonged to?

Would you save your gum after you chewed it?

  • Interesting story! Be sure to include personal thoughts within your summary. Also be sure to reply back three different days next time.

  • I find it very interesting that they were able to find how a human being looked a long time ago, but there would be no point for scientists to figure out how a person looked today and I would not save it because that is just weird.

  • I would not pick up a piece of gun off the streets to see whos gum it was because i would think its not important because a lot of people chew gum and dont swallow it. I would not save my gum after i chew it because its kinda gross having a jar of chewed up gum that you are saving.

  • I have no knowledge (and probably never will) of using a piece of chewing gum to trace the DNA on it to a person, dead or alive. Picking up the gum would be something I would be concerned about not doing. I see no purpose in saving my gum after I've chewed all the flavor out of it or my jaw begins to hurt, so it goes into the trash.

  • I would have to be incredibly bored to pick up a random piece of gum and get the DNA tested to find out whose it was. Although I suppose it would be funny if you tracked that person down and gave it back to them so that they can throw it away in the right place. Also, no I do not save my gum after I'm done with it.

    • I agree, I also wouldn't just pick a piece of gum up to get the DNA in it. There would be no point because once you get the DNA you wouldn't do anything with it. You could find out who it belonged to and how they looked but that would be weird.

  • No I wouldn’t just pick up some random gum on the street. It’s gross and a waste of time trying to figure out who’s DNA it is. No I wouldn’t save my gum after already chewing it. It’s flavorless and gross by then, so I would just throw it away.

  • No, I wouldn't because normally when you are walking down in a city or some type of big town you would not pick up someone's gum. No, I would not save my gum after I chewing it. I would just spit it out in the trash.

  • I would not pick up the random piece of gum off the streets because I find that disgusting. Also I would not save my gum after I chewed it because there is no point in saving the gum even if they wanted to create a image off me because there are plenty of pictures of me already.
