Charges have been brought against Navy SEAL special forces operative, Edward Ghallagher, for the murder of a captured teenage Islamic state operative. Ghallagher was on his eighth tour when the events had happened. He plans to plead not guilty to all of the charges that have been brought against him. The prosecution had stated that they have accounts from fellow Navy SEALS which came to a surprise due to the fact that they are such a tight nit group even in army standards. The defense says that the accounts are just other soilders trying to remove a demanding officer from his position. Besides the alleged murder of the teenage boy there have been several other accounts of other citizens being shot and killed or shot at by Ghallager. He has been in the service for a total of 19 years and has dedicated his life to the service. If convicted of the crime he faces life in prison.

1. Do you think he abused his power to take advantage of innocent people?

2. Where do we draw the line between protecting yourself as a soilder and killing innocent people ruthlessly?

  • 1. I dont think he was trying take advantage of innocent people considering this doesnt get anything though he may be using his power to get away with it

    2. I think the line needs to be drawn when your actions are shunned by fellow soldiers.

  • 1 - No, I don't think that Ghallagher abused his power to take advantage of innocent people. I think that if he were to be doing that, he wouldn't be in the Navy. Most people that are in the military and have done that many tours don't have a person agenda to fulfill. I think that if he thought it was necessary to kill this person, there probably was a good reason.

    • I agree to an extent with this it is all just going to come down to what the court decides. In war there are definitely lots of horrible things that have to happen in order for the cause to be succesful, but ruthlessly killing unarmed citizens cannot and will not be tollerated by the United States military.

  • I think he might have abused him powers becasue if the teenage Islamic operative had already been captured he had no need to kill him unless he tried to attack. I also think it is very important to protect yourself and your fellow officers around you but if there is no need to be killing inocent people ruthlessly.

    • I also think there is a high chance that he was abusing his power. By the sounds of it he may be mentally unstable and not in a fit mindset to be fighting a war and making key decisions on the battlefield. Only time will tell the outcome of this case.

  • Pleading guilty is probably his best bet because the chances of him coming out of this situation as not guilty are very slim. Especially since there is evidence against him. If he goes to trial, he could get himself a worse sentence than if he just pled guilty of this crime. However, if he is not guilty, which I doubt, he would be convicting himself of something he did not do.

    • I would disagree to the statement that he should plead guilty, due to the fact that if he does that then he will be convicted definitly. If he pleads not guilty at least he will have a chance to defend himself and possibly free himself of the charges.

  • I think he should just plead guilty becaue if they got him on other cases of shooting other teenagers in other countryes that had nothing to do with the fighting thwn ya he needs to pleed gulity especilly that fact that his fellow army members have evneidence he has done it

    • I feel like if he is guilty and knows that he is than a military member should have the decency to take responsibility for his actions. If he is not in a stable mindset though then he may not believe he is guilty even if he is.
