National Parks Taking the hit by Government Shutdown

With the recent government shutdown, national park's gates are remaining open to the public free of charge. But, people are abusing the opportunity of enjoying the parks. Garbage is being thrown everywhere, and toilets are overflowing. The reason for parks remaining open is because a contingency plan was set up. The plan was set up last year, and it only allows a small group to continue work and be paid. The few workers are unable to handle the people who are visiting the parks. The staff is closing roads or areas in the parks, but no one is there to enforce the rules. The National Parks Conservation Association says, "National Parks have lost approximately $5 million in fees since the government shutdown." At Yosemite, 27 tons of trash have been brought to the park, and none of it is being properly disposed of. In Big Bend, a hiker broke his leg. He could not call a ranger because no one was working. The hiker luckly was by a family of four who helped him.

Why do you think the parks remain open?

I think they remain open to entertain the public, but they cannot fully enjoy the parks because they are being trashed. I do not think they should remain open. People are abusing the opportunity of enjoying the beautiful parks by trashing them.

Do you think parks should be understaffed while the government is shutdown?

I went to Rocky Mountain National Park over break. I was upset. I do not think they should be under staffed because people were parking in odd places and being towed. Hikers were going off paths, and they should not have in case of emergency. Also, there was a lot of speeding, and people thinking they could get close to wild life.

  • Great job Madi!

  • 1) I think that they do stay open just so the public has somethin got do. I also believe that if the parks do stay open they will want to make people come back more. I just think they want to entertain the people.

2 No, I think that if anything parks should be overstaffed. I think that, like you said, people will get out of control and just start doing whatevr they want> I think that parks should always have enough people to run the park.

  • 1. they are probably still open because people would try to sneak in otherwise and might steal or break things or cause a fire

    2. I think that while the government is in shutdown they cant afford to have the parks fully staffed

  • I think the parks remain open because it's a national park and people from all over come to see it, also the few workers need their pay for the month and they have to work to be able to pay for rent and food. I don't think that the parks should've been undterstaffed though speaking of the guy that broke his leg if he was alone he could've almost died so I think since they were so understaffed that they shouldn't have left it open.

  • I think that the parks remain open so it can destract people of whats really happening, and so that the government doesnt look bad. It will still show the good of nature in America, and thats what they want you to see.

I dont think the parks should be understaffed because that is not very prfessional, and its very dangerous, not just for the park, but for the people as well.

    • I do believe they want us to see the good nature of America. The parks are beautiful in their own special way. I also agree that park should not be understaffed because that is not very professional. It is dangerous because people could get lost and injured, and they will not have a way to find help.

  • 1.) I think they remain open because just because of the Government shutting down, it doesn't mean the public should enjoy the National Parks.

2.) The parks should be staffed how it would normally be on a daily basis (before Government shutdown). We should take care of the National Parks because they are a very big part of our Nation's history and should be treating the parks as such.

    • I agree the staff should be how it normally is. But even with full staff, the parks still struggle to find work because no one is interested. We should take care of the national parks. They are apart of our history and it's sad how we take them for granted.

  • I think they remain open becuase they still want to keep the public intrigued and coming. I believe that they should close them up for the sake of nature and it's lasting beauty.I know that many respect the parks, but there are also many who do not and trash the parks.

  • 1 - I think that the parks are remaining open because it having the beautiful area is a blessing that we take for granted. It is sad that people are trashing them, but its not like the people working there really have a choice in the matter. It's just sad to think that we can't take care of what we have.

2 - I don't think that the parks should be understaffed during the government shutdown. If everyone working in the government still gets paid during the shutdown, then so should the people actually doing their jobs. Those working in the parks aren't the ones that chose for the government shutdown to happen so they shouldn't have to pay the price, and neither should our parks.
