MRSA is not a game

New York Giants tight end, Daniel Fells, has developed MRSA in his foot after a foot injury. Fells has been in the intensive care unit and is no longer playing. Fells has had multiple surgeries so far, trying to help his foot. The disease could cost him his career and possibly, his life.

MRSA is staph infection which is now resistant to most antibiotics. Daniel is fighting the infection as best as possible and hopefully hasn't given the infection to any of the other players. The staff has instructed the team on how to prevent the disease along with sanitizing the while facility.

Spokesman, Pat Hanlon, for the Giants said that "This is a serious situation and has been taken serious from the beginning."

My opinion: I would for sure be taking the all precautions I could for the team not to develop MRSA. Also, if I was Daniel, I would be trying to heal myself as fast as possible and hoping I wouldn't have to get my foot cut off.

1. How would you react if you found out you had this disease?

2. If yo had the choice of keeping your foot and not being able to play a sport or amputating and being able to play a sport(not as well as you did before), which would you choose?

  • Good job Fay!

  • I would be very sad if I got this disease because I feel like I would have ended my career and I would make sure the team doesn't get infected. I would just amputate my foot even if I could play as well as before, I would still want to play.

  • I would be terrified if i found out that I had the infection, i would go to the doctor right away and get therapy as soon as possible, because your feet are one of the most important parts on your body.  Well im pretty sure everyone would choose to keep your foot, as long as you could keep on walking/running.

  • I would definitely be concerned about this infection, just because your feet are a vital part of you- especially when you're a runner! However, I would definitely question whether or not having my foot amputated would be the right thing to do. I feel like amputating my foot and not being able to play the sport as well as I did before would definitely be the way to go, if it meant that I could keep running.

    • I agree Kara! I know you can relate well to this post because you are a runner. Definitely would be questioning whether to amputate or not.

  • I would tell my head coach right away so he can warn the other player and clean the facially and everything that I touched.

    • That is very wise thinking! Putting your team first!

  • Even if he amputates his foot or not his NFL career is still over. But if I were him I'd try to see if he can save his foot and not get it amputated.

    • Yes, that is true his career will be over. I think trying to save it will be the better route to take.

  • I would be scared if I had this disease because it may cost me something I love doing, but if it came down to it I would keep my foot because you can have your feet forever you can't play sports forever.
