Movie Reviews: Airplane! (1980)

I hope this review is a bit more familiar to you than the last.  I think that everyone knows about this movie in one way or another.  The funny lines, the great visual jokes, Leslie Nielsen, etc.  I think that everyone who has seen this movie has loved it, and I am certainly one of them.

Rundown of the plot-We start with Ted Striker trying to catch up with his stewardess girlfriend Elaine, but she is working on a flight from Los Angeles to Chicago.  He decides to go on the plane to try to get back with her, but disaster is about to occur.  And no, that's not from taking a "smoking" airplane ticket.

Unfortunately, Captain Oveur and co-pilot Roger Murdock, who is actually Kareem-Abdul-Jabar, are taken ill after eating the fish, as are a few passengers being treated by Doctor Rumack.  Ted Striker, who flew airplanes for "the war", an old sterotype in these movies, and becomes the only hope for the disaster flight.

He is hardly able to fly straight, let alone land the thing, and is helped by grounds crew in Chicago.  While in the cockpit and trying to fly, his co-pilot fill in, Elaine, and he start to become good friends again, but not in the way you're thinking, sicko!  Actually, there are a few references here and there to some bad stuff in the cockpit.

At the end of the film, it comes time to land the plane, and with repeated good luck wishes from Dr. Rumack and the instructions of the grounds crew, it is "safely" landed.  And the film ends with Otto the auto-pilot, an inflatable guy, flies off toward another flight.

All right, let's go through the grading scale:

Acting-8 out of 10.  Good acting, great comedic moments.

Entertainment-10 out of 10.  Hardly a laugh that doesn't work.

Screenplay-9 out of 10.  A few spots here and there that distract from the airplane aren't quite as funny.

Directing-7 out of 10.  Three directors worked on the film, and also wrote it.  A few spots here and there seem like completely different films.

Technical Credits-8 out of 10.  Good music, but everything else is standard.

Genre Fit-10 out of 10.  100% comedy with no dramatic subplots.

MPAA Rating-6 out of 10.  Rated PG, though there is some harsh language and nudity in the film.

Stupid Scenes-10 out of 10.  No scene ever fails.

Deeper Message-0 out of 10.  It's a comedy.

Beginning-28 out of 30.  Quite a few laughs but I still think there could have been a few shots that could have taken quicker.

Middle-29 out of 30.  Almost perfect.

Ending-29 out of 30.  A great ending up to standards of the rest of the film.

Final Score: 154/180 or 86%.  An A-.  A good film that is just short of an instant classic.
