Mom Dies in Fire After Saving Baby

A 21-year-old mother is called a hero after she saved her newborn daughter from a house fire on Monday morning. Shelby Carter of Wyoming, Illinois was home with her 2-week-old daughter when her house caught on fire. To save her baby from the fire, she strapped the baby into a car seat and dropped her from a second- floor window. Shelby Carter then died from smoke inhalation. Her baby daughter only suffered from a minor burn and was released from the hospital shortly after. There has been a GoFundMe page set up to help the family and it has already raised more than $23,000.

Questions:

1) If you were in Shelby Cater's situation, what would you have done?

2) Do you think Shelby handled the situation the best that she could? Explain.

My Opinion:

If I was in Shelby's situation I would have called 911, if I could get access to a phone. If there was no phone available, I would've opened a window up or broke a window out and tried to get help. As my last result, I would've done the same thing she did. Yes, I do think Shelby handled the situation the best that she possibly could because the baby made it out with only a little burn. I think that the injures could have been much worse if she waited around for help to come.

  • Excellent job Janesa!

  • She handled the situation somewhat well because she saved her baby, but then she couldn't save herself. It was good that she didn't wait though, as the fire could have effected the baby. I would have probably done a the same thing as her in the situation.

  • did the same thing with the baby and then jump out my self its only a 2 story your not going to die unless your you get a heart attack doing it or your body is really frail or you land on your neck; so unless she had those conditions i would've jumped out the window. Maybe she shouldn't have left anything on that would've set something on fire unless it was the house wiring itself, but other wise it would pretty much would be their falt is just what i think. But if her objective was to save the baby then she did well but she still could've covered her face with cloth to help prevent smoke inhalation and for the baby as well put something over the baby so the baby doesn't get burnt and the lower out the window with your self by jumping out and landing either on all four to take the impact evenly or on your two legs and possibly get something broken or you might just have your legs numb.

  • If I were in Shelby Cater's situation, my first instinct would have been to make sure that my daughter was safe.  I think I would also call 911 as soon as possible.  After that, I would've tried to escape through a window.  If I was unable to escape with my child, I would have done the same thing that Shelby did.  I think that Shelby did a great job handling this situation, considering her baby survived with only minor burns.

  • I don't know what I would've done. I definitely wouldn't have dropped them out the window. That would've been my last resort. I would've been scared that I would kill her from impact. I think I would probably grab my baby and run out the door or something like that or call 911. I think she thought she handled it the best she could in the time of panic. But, I definitely think there was a solution that could have saved both her and her baby. I do think her thoughts were heroic and I hope that there is a dad in the picture that can take care of the baby.

    • I agree with you. I think I would've been pretty scared to drop my baby from that height. If there was no possible way to get out of the room then I would've done exactly what she did.

  • I would have called 911 and then would have done the same thing. she did the right thing

  • I think its great that Shelby put her daughters life before hers. I mean most parents would I know i would. Its sad that She died though trying to save her daughter. I think it was smart to drop her out of the window because then the baby is not inhaling the smoke.

    • I agree that Shelby did a very heroic thing by putting other life's before her own. I think it is sad that she had to die and couldn't think of another efficient way to get out safety.

  • It's incredible what she did and if I had been her in that situation I would have also tried everything to save my newborn child. Realistically she was very lucky though, lucky to be clear-headed, and lucky to have things like a car seat in the second floor of her house. I still don't get how she just had a car seat right there. Regardless of that what she did was very brave, courageous, and honorable.
