The MLB has asked for it's big donation to Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith back after her controversial "public hanging," comments. The Senator will have a face off election against the democrat Mike Espy this coming Tuesday. The Senator is to fill in for retired Senator Thad Cochran but with the arising news it may be a very difficult task to do so this Tuesday. She was recorded during a campaign stop saying if a supporter invited her to a “public hanging,” she would be in “the front row.” She later announced that it was said as a joke and it was not racist in any way. The people are outraged with her comments as says NAACP President Derrick Johnson, “Hyde-Smith’s decision to joke about ‘hanging,’ in a state known for its violent and terroristic history toward African Americans is sick.” The MLB is waiting for its five thousand donation to her campaign to return as soon as possible to prevent any ties with racist comments.

Do you feel comments like these should be accepted? If not what do you think would be an apropiate punishment?

I don think comments like that are very smart to say especially in a state like Mississippi. I believe that she should at the very least apologize to the people for what she said.

What do you belieive the Senator's chances are of winning the election are now this coming Tuesday?

I think her chances of winning probably have changed quite a bit a comment like that can get a lot of people to vote the other way or just move to another option.

  • Mason,

Your summary is fine but you didn't repy to any student comments which is worth 20 points.

  • I don't think that they should be accepted because making those comments was not a very smart thing to do. I think that asking for their donation back was an appropriate thing to do considering what she had said. Her chances of winning have also probably changed. Many people probably did not like what she said and their opinion on her probably changed.

  • Those comments are not smart to say when you are in charge of a country that once was very racist. There were probable many "public hangings" in Mississippi at one point in time. Now that the elections are over and she won, it is hard to believe that she won.

  • I don't think any comment like this should be accepted because it is very bad on he part. She pry didn't think that it would get this out of control, but it did and she can't change any of her actions. Thats why people should think before they do things like this. Her chances are very low. Many people are probably changing their opinions about her.
