Missing People

Have you heard about Gabrielle Petetio? Of course, you have she was all over the news just a few weeks ago. In case you didn't know she was a social media influencer who was murdered and left in a national park. Everyone decided to try and hunt down her fiance Brian for weeks on end. But what about all of the other people that die or go missing. Who spent time looking for them till they are found.

People go missing every day but nobody thinks about going out and looking for them because they aren't famous or rich. 540,000 people go missing every year and only 98% of them are found. That means the 10,800 wont get found. The first 72 hours are the most important. After that people start to stop looking. Although people that go missing in smaller cities and towns might be searched for a long time, people in big cities can't spare resources because of the amount of cases they have to handle every day.

Would you be ok with the fact that people might just give up hope after a few days or weeks of being lost even though you might still be alive. I certainly would not be ok with that. People should be searched for for more than the first 72 hours of being missing.

Do you think that people should be searched for longer?

  • I personally think that people should look longer than 72 hours ,but not more than a week. At a certain point you just have to step back from it. You can't put your whole life on pause like your job or even go to stores to get food and other needs. If every missing person case would be looked for over a week it would be an overload and no one would get anything done.

  • I personally don't think that people should be searched for longer by the police. After a certain amount of time they hand the cases over to bounty hunters or local crime podcasts and they let people search for you. The police are often overloaded and can't continue on. Most people are searched for over a week. The odds of someone being alive after a week is very minimal.

  • I think people should be searched for a longer time because they can still be alive after 72 hours. I think they should treat rich people and poor people the same. Both lives are worth the same. They are still both human lives and people shouldn't care which one has more money.

    • I agree that both lives are worth the same. People should be searched for no matter how much money or followers they have.

  • I do think people should be searched for longer. You never know where a missing person is and if they are still alive. I dont think people should stop looking for anyone till they know where or if that person is hurt or possible dead.

  • I think that people should be looked or searched for for a long long time. They should be looked for until evidence is found or until they are found. Just because if they aren't found after the first 72 hours the chance of finding them goes down to next to zero percent chance doesn't mean you should stop looking.

  • I think that people should be searched for at least a day longer before people start to stop looking for them because in that extra 24 hours you could find them. I also think that people just need to not go missing even though that physically impossible because someone always feels the need to kidnap someone.

  • While it would be nice if we could spend an infinite amount of time searching for these people we simply cannot. Resources and people will eventually dwindle down until it is only those who truly love them, such as family or spouse. People of authority, while they most likely do not want to leave someone missing, have to make that tough choice of should I try and find the person who's been missing for 4 days who we have no lead on, or the others who we can figure out where they are? While a missing person case can be devastating, sometimes no amount of searching can bring them back.

  • Definitely why should we spend time searching for one person just because they are of public interest. I believe that they should put  longer time frames to search for missing people. Of course in most cases that is sadly unrealistic because we just don't have the man power to spend years on each person.

    • I agree that the time frame of a public search party to be searching for a missing person shouldbe extended beyond 72 hours, but not by much. Resourses are valuable and should not be spent on something that will likely lead nowhere.
