Missing People

Have you heard about Gabrielle Petetio? Of course, you have she was all over the news just a few weeks ago. In case you didn't know she was a social media influencer who was murdered and left in a national park. Everyone decided to try and hunt down her fiance Brian for weeks on end. But what about all of the other people that die or go missing. Who spent time looking for them till they are found.

People go missing every day but nobody thinks about going out and looking for them because they aren't famous or rich. 540,000 people go missing every year and only 98% of them are found. That means the 10,800 wont get found. The first 72 hours are the most important. After that people start to stop looking. Although people that go missing in smaller cities and towns might be searched for a long time, people in big cities can't spare resources because of the amount of cases they have to handle every day.

Would you be ok with the fact that people might just give up hope after a few days or weeks of being lost even though you might still be alive. I certainly would not be ok with that. People should be searched for for more than the first 72 hours of being missing.

Do you think that people should be searched for longer?

  • I agree with the fact that more time should be spent on searching for those missing, but on the other hand this does take away the time and energy to search for others or deal with other cases, I think that people should be searched for until found, or proven dead. Although it would be amazing to find every person who ever goes missing, it is hard, and not 100% possible always to find them.

    • I agree that it would be amazing to find every missing person but we do need to spend our time and resources on other emergencies.

  • I thik taht people should be seartched for longer but then again if you search for too long then you wont have time to find the other missing people but I think that its a terrible thing when they search for this person for a really long time and there really close to fiding him or her and they call it off.

    • I agree that people should be searched for longer but like you said to many people go missing so you cant spend to much time on one case

  • I think the people looking for the person should have looked for them as long as they could and they should not have given up until they found them or at least thought they found them. If I was the one searching I would not like having to give up on a missing person.

  • I would not like being given up on. However, the amount of time and resources it would take to not give up is just too much. Also, you would need people to look and some cases just don't have enough people to help. Also, the police have hundreds of other cases to deal with.

    • I agree that we don't have enough resources to make a team dedicated although it would help.

    • I agree. We all want to beliee that (beyond our close family and friends) peoplewouldn't give up on searching for us after 72 hours, we all have to deal with the fact that it would become a simple waste of resourses.

  • I think that people should search until the missing person is found. However, after a long period of time, people will need to divert their resources and energy to someone else's case.

    • Yes for sure. Searching until the person is found is the right thing to do. Although like you mentioned sometimes that is just not possible and we can't have one detective stuck in a case for years. That is just unrealistic and would be impossible. Although it is the right thing to do because everyone deserves justice.
