Minivan Dragged for Miles in Snow

On Wednesday morning there was a terrible snow storm going on in Michigan. The Menz family was traveling on I-75 when they drove up fast behind a semi moving at an extremely slow speed. Due to the slick conditions, low visibility, and speed they were traveling they were not able to stop in time to avoid rear ending the semi. The twist in this story, however, is that when they rear ended the semi their van got stuck to the rear end. The semi driver somehow did not feel the van hit them, and continued driving--for 16 miles. When the van hit the semi it completely broke down so they could not turn the wheel or honk the horn to make the semi driver notice them. The family then called 911, but they were not able to give a location or information on the semi because their windows were covered with snow. After the 16 miles the Michigan police were able to locate and stop the semi so they could free the van and its passengers.

What would you have done in a situation like this? Do you find it odd that the driver of the semi did not feel the van when he was rear ended?

  • Great job once again!

  • In a situation like this I would have panicked and tried to alert other drivers to get the semi drivers attention, and I don't find it odd because those trucks are huge and there heavy.

  • This is crazy. If I were in that van I would have been very afraid. Having your vehicle get stuck into the back of semi-truck. Then how the driver never noticed that the car hit the semi is so weird. There lucky that the semi didn't get thrown off course by the impact because it would have brought their car with them.

    • Yea. They were very lucky that nothing worse came out of the accident other than maybe whiplash. Scary situation, and I think they handled it like every other person would have.

  • I would call 911. Honestly I find it hard to get yourself into a situation like this. I don't, semi's are very big and if you've ever been in one you'd know that its had to see things going on behind you.

  • I would be flipping out! and I guess I don't think I would get in that situation from the beginning but if I was I would try roll down the window get the snow off and call 911 so the police knew where they were and that means they get out of the car that the semi is pulling them faster.

    • It'd be very dangerous to try to clear the windows off while being dragged by a semi. Especially in white out conditions.

  • I would've tried to get someone else on the road or hit the brakes to try to get loose of the semi. The semi probably didn't feel it because its a lot bigger of the van and wasnt moving very fast.

    • They probably tried this, but all functions of the vehicle were shut down; even the horn.

  • I would have called the police as-well, maybe rolled the window down and flailed my arms, or even open the door(seat-belt on of course). I find it odd that the driver did not notice the van collide with it's rear-end, but given the weather conditions, it is a possibility.
