Minimum Wage

The minimum wage is $7.25 but many people believe that this is too low. This topic has been brought up many times about how minimum wage should be raised. If minimum wage had grown in the line with productivity it would currently be at $26 per hour or about $50,000 a yearly income. Minimum wage has been at $7.25 for the past 12 years, so I believe that it is time for change. Worldwide, almost 250,000 workers earn $7.25 per hour, while around 865,000 earn less than that.

Raising the minimum wage would also get more teens to work jobs because they’re earning more of an income than they’re used to. We also have to take in the fact that the higher minimum wage goes up the more pricey things get. For instance, if you go out to buy a sandwich now it’s about $5 whereas if businesses have to pay their employees more for higher minimum wage, they have to raise the price of their products.

Inflation has also gone up over the years and that’s why I believe we should raise the minimum wage. You can’t pay for expensive items when you’re only making $7.25 an hour. Minimum wage needs to be raised so people can take care of themselves and their families.

Do you believe the minimum wage should be raised?

If yes, why?

Do you work for minimum wage? Do you like working for minimum wage, why or why not?

  • I do not work for minimum wage. I personally don't know of many jobs that pay minimum wage other than restaurant waiters or local pool lifeguards. I don't believe that I would ever work for such a low payment unless of course, I made a decent amount of money in tips. Another reason I would work for minimum wage was if the job were extremely easy.

  • I am unsure if the minimum wage should be raised or not. In theory, making more money sounds nice but when you look at the possible negative of this action it's very concerning. For example, Higher minimum wage often leads to inflation which is a large negative in any economy.

    • I agree with you, that's why I believe we should slowly increase minimum wage so that business can still keep up and inflation doesn't go up too high. If we go up too fast too soon they we won't be able to keep businesses open because people wouldn't be able to pay for their needs.

  • I can see both ways on the minimum wage topic. I think that earning more money would be nice in theory, but I don't think minimum wage should be higher because that would just increase the cost of other things and you basically would not be making anymore money. I don't work for minimum wage.

  • I do not think that minimum wage should be increased because if they increase that than the prices of everything will just go up meaning raising minimum wage would be pointless. I do not work for minimum wage i make almost 3 times of it meaning if it were to be rasied and prices went up id pretty much be making less money.

  • I think that minimum wage should be increased but not by a lot at first or it will cause a shock to the system. But people should also realize that if minimum wage goes up and people are getting paid more then prices will go up and you will have to pay more for things.

    • I agree with you, that's everything I said but just wrapped up and shorter. Minimum wage will have to go up slower because it will shock the system and people won't be able to pay for goods if inflation goes up that fast.

  • Well in some circumstances it should most definitely be, like for the people that really need it. The people that get minimum wage usually need a lot more money than that to live a somewhat decent life. I do not work for minimum wage. I wouldn't like working for minimum wage because I feel like the work I do is worth a lot more than that.

  • There is many different thoughts on minimum wage for sure. It can be good because you can get paid more and having a bigger paycheck but it will raise the prices of the stuff you purchased on a daily base. Also, if the business is smaller than it can be harder for those owners to make sure they pay their employess $15 and still have money to buy products for the business. It would definitely be nice to have a pay raise and a bigger paycheck in the end but I don't know if raising it all the way to $15 is a good idea, we need to take little steps towards it not a big jump.

  • In my opinion minimum wage definitely should be increased because there is an unemployment payment that is more 15$ per hour so there is a serious unemployment crisis in some parts of the United States, so in order to make people work, government should give reasonable money to the citizens.
