Minimum Wage

The minimum wage is $7.25 but many people believe that this is too low. This topic has been brought up many times about how minimum wage should be raised. If minimum wage had grown in the line with productivity it would currently be at $26 per hour or about $50,000 a yearly income. Minimum wage has been at $7.25 for the past 12 years, so I believe that it is time for change. Worldwide, almost 250,000 workers earn $7.25 per hour, while around 865,000 earn less than that.

Raising the minimum wage would also get more teens to work jobs because they’re earning more of an income than they’re used to. We also have to take in the fact that the higher minimum wage goes up the more pricey things get. For instance, if you go out to buy a sandwich now it’s about $5 whereas if businesses have to pay their employees more for higher minimum wage, they have to raise the price of their products.

Inflation has also gone up over the years and that’s why I believe we should raise the minimum wage. You can’t pay for expensive items when you’re only making $7.25 an hour. Minimum wage needs to be raised so people can take care of themselves and their families.

Do you believe the minimum wage should be raised?

If yes, why?

Do you work for minimum wage? Do you like working for minimum wage, why or why not?

  • Good job overall Kayla! Your summary is good but could have been a bit longer. Perhaps go into the history of the minimum wage.

  • I do not think that the minimum wage should be raised because if it is it will only make everyday products more expensive wich would esentialy do nothing but decline the value of the amarican dollar. I do not work for minumum wage however I think that it is a terible idea to raise it.

  • Personally I think that minimum wage should go up some because of inflation, but not alot because of what it will do to prices. The higher we raise the minimum wage the less products will cost at first, but will soon become outrageous. Employeres will also have to let people go if minimum wage gets to high to keep up with demands. I don't work for minimum wage but if I did I would like it at first because it's some income but soon it wouldn't be enough.

  • Yes, minimum wage should definitely get a big ol' bump up to a living wage. Many countries already have much higher minimum wages, some even double that of the US. For instance, the average price of a big mac in the US is $3.57. Denmark has a minimum wage of about 18 US dollars, but an average big mac price of $4.87. That's not so bad now, is it?

  • I think minimum wage should be raised. If people got more money there would be less people in poverty and people would be able to afford houses. Yes things would become more expensive but with people making more money it would not be as difficult to afford things. I do not work  so I do not know if I would like working minimum wage or not.

  • You know minimum wage doesn't need raised but if it was it should shoot up to $15 an hour like Biden was thinking. Yes for the fact that people want money give it to them. But they also have to pay more for the stuff they want. I don't even work like that, but if I worked for minimum wage I wouldn't find it favorable.

  • I don't understand much about minimum wage but I think yes it should get raised but not to much and not too little. I have no idea what it is like working for mimmum wage so I really can't say if I like it or not, but I do like money so I would want it raised if I was working at that rate also.

    • I agree with you but I'm not sure what you mean completely. Minimum wage is only $7.25 right now and they are people struggling to keep their families going. Right now, it's not that big of deal for us becuse were not taking care of anyone.

  • No, I do not think they should rasie the minimum wage, because if you were rasie it, prices for everything would raise. I think people are going to have to get over the minimum wage, and that your not going to make a lot of money at first, and you have to work hard to get raises, and or promotions, to make more money. If you were to rasie the minimum wage to 15 dollars right now it would probably only worsen the economy.

  • I think that minimum wage should be raised but not by a whole lot. Because if we raise to much it would skyrocket the price of almost all products made in America. If we increase minimum wage it would lower the amount of people living in poverty. And they would be able to afford better insurance and nicer houses in safer neighborhoods.
