"Milkly Rain" Pours Down on Oregon

It was raining in Northeast Oregon this week, but not just any rain, this was "Milky Rain". Scientists were fist puzzled to hear of this, considering no rain is truly white. But after a bit of looking into, it looks like the rains grayish-white tint is caused by dust that has been blown high into the atmosphere, and settled around Northeast Oregon. The dust is possibly from the volcanic activity in Northern Russia.

As you can see in the picture, the dusty rain makes this car window appear white.

How would you feel if you saw your car covered in "Milky Rain"?

What if something like this would happen in Iowa? What would be your first thoughts? How would you react?

  • Well done!

  • I would really want to put my car into the garage and then get it all washed off! It reminds me of old milk being spilled all over the car ... And that really grosses me out! My first reaction in Iowa would to be alarmed and turn on the news to find out why this was happening!

    • Yeah, that's probably what I would do! It would be really odd!

  • If this happened to my car, I would be pretty upset, especially if not all of it would wash off. If this rain would cause damage to any outside equipment or cars, I would guess that insurance companies will be receiving many claims within the next few days. The people in Oregon are probably going to start parking their car garages instead of on the streets.

    • I don't think the rain can cause any damage because it is just dust. But if it did that would be really bad.

  • If my car window was covered in that, i would immediately go find something to wash it off and get rid of it and I would hope that it rains again soon to wash everything else off that was outside. If something like this happened in Iowa it would be very odd. I would be scared at first that maybe it was radioactive or something and I would probably not play around in it.

    • Yeah it would be really strange, good comment.

  • As long as it was really RAIN and didn't get into my car, I would be fine with it. Hey, it might give my clunker some color and character, considering I can't afford a Lamborghini. It depends on how much of the "milky rain" would hit Iowa. If it was inches I'd be completely fine, as long as it wasn't harmful to the people, animals, or surrounding environment.

    • That's a good point. As long as it didn't disturb the environment or people then I would be fine with it.

  • I would think that if the rain is colored like that I would think of dust. Maybe the water collected dust and made the water that type of color.
