Vice President Mike Pence says he left 49-ers vs. Colts game on Sunday, October 8th at Lucas Stadium in Indianapolis because of protesting that occurred during the national anthem. Mike stated on Twitter that he left the game because he and Donald Trump will not honor any event that dishonors soldiers, the flag or the national anthem. The 49-ers, for the second week in a row, have had more than 20 players kneeling with their hands over their hearts during the national anthem. The Colts meanwhile, wore black shirts with the words that state "We Will" on the front side and "Stand For Equality, Justice, Unity, Respect, Dialogue, Opportunity" on the back. President Donald Trump tweeted that he had asked Mike Pence to leave the stadium if any players kneeled.

Pence tweeted a picture of him and his wife saying that they are looking forward to cheering on the Colts and honoring Manning. But the photo he tweeted appeared to be from 2014. The photo on twitter showed him wearing a Colts polo shirt. He was then photographed on Sunday, October 8th wearing a suit during the national anthem.

Questions:

1. Do you think it should be in our constitutional rights to kneel during the national anthem?

2. If you were a player in this situation, do you think that this is the most effective way of protesting or getting your point across? Why or why not?

My Opinion:

Yes, I think you should be able to kneel during the national anthem. It's a choice that you make personally, but It's disrespectful to more than just our president.

If I was a player, I think that this would be a lot more neutral way of protesting than speaking out.  They are getting their point across with as little affliction as possible.

  • Well done Janesa!

  • No, there should not be a choice whether to kneel or not. You should stand for our country and the people who are risking their lives for our freedom. If I was a player, I would not kneel because more attention would be drawn to you and you might loose some of your fans.

    • I also agree that this is a good way to protest, but it does anger a lot of people because they think too deep into it. Yes, it is disrespectful and I feel like they could've possibly thought of a different way to protest without causing such a disagreement with everyone. But, I also think this is one of the more calmer ways of protesting then to speak out.

  • I think you should be able to. I think that in someways people are creating this to be bigger than it needs to be, its a big deal but it dosent need to go further than the coach saying that they need to stand up. I think that if I was a player that i would do something else then doing that at a big game. Just be a bit more subtle with things.

    • I totally agree. I feel like this is a great way to protest to get your point across without speaking out. I feel like people are blowing it out of proportion a little bit. I see what you are saying with doing something different at a big game though.

  • I don't think that it should be illegal for people to kneel during the national anthem but it is very disrespectful to those who give there lives to fight for our freedom. I don't think this is the right way to protest because its really being disrespectful to our soldiers and country, not just the president. There are many other peaceful ways you can speak out while still showing respect.

    • I agree. I feel like it is disrespectful to our soldiers and our country. I think they could have definitely thought of another form of protesting, but I also think that this is the most mellow form of protesting. They aren't speaking out and causing a scene. I see where you are coming from though.

  • It's a person's choice to kneel, but they will look foolish, should the media catch wind of it. If i were a player, i would just stand for the anthem, because that's what the media wants to see: people kneeling during the anthem, it gains a lot of viewers, and stirs up drama, which is not needed in this country. we're dealing with enough stuff already, things like this should not be one of them.

  • You can do want you want but you look like an idiot when you kneel during the National Anthem. I wouldn't do it because I really respect our country and if the rest of the team kneels and I didn't that would be enough said.

    • Yes I agree! I feel that people should have the right to do what they want, but I see where you are coming from. It is disrespectful but they are doing it as a protest.
