Midwest Faces subzero temperatures

A second winter storm in less than a week has Midwestern residents bracing for bitter subzero wind chills while those in the East Coast hunker down amid a fresh coat of snowfall. I don't deal well in the cold so I hope that this doesn't last very long and they are saying the wind chill could drop below -50 which could very easily cause frostbite if outside too long. It is also supposed to snow a lot this week which could also cause more problems.

The only good thing about the bad weather is that there is a chance for no school and I think we can all agree on that. Officials across the country are urging people to stay home for any non-essential business and keep off the roads for their own safety, with the weather causing impaired visibility and hazardous conditions. Slightly warmer days are on the horizon, however. Temperatures are expected to begin rising on Sunday afternoon, with only a few daily low temperature records forecasted as the week progresses.

Definetly people need to be prepared for these drastic temperature changes and everyone should dress appropriatly. Frostbite can set in on exposed skin within 10 minutes of being out in temperatures that severe, according to the agency. Another issue that could happen is peoples cars not being able to start in the cold and if that happens to you then you should ask someone else to give you rides to places or take a bus.

What other issues could arise from these subzero temperatures?

Do you know anyone who has been affected badly from the previous snow storms?

  • Overall fine job Aiden. I'm not a big fan of your topic choice as weather is just limited in what can be talked about. Maybe you could have talked about how it impacts school closures and whether we should be delayed when it's so cold out. Also, all of your comments were on the same day so be sure to comment on three different days next time.

  • For some people, walking is their only form of transportation. However, this type of weather is way too cold and dangerous to be walking out in, so that's a problem. I've heard of many people that say their cars won't start in freezing cold weather like this, so it is very bad. School should be cancelled on days where it's extremely below zero.

  • Other issues that could arise is important events being cancelled, road conditions causing crashes, and people and animals outside. Our school hasn't done any cancellations this week, and I doubt there'll be any tommorrow, so any children who walk to school are at risk. This also go means people who walk to work are at risk. Also, animals during this weather are often neglected, and neglection during these temperatures could be fatal to them.

  • Subzero temps can come with freezing pipes for running water and certain things like that. If there was a hose left outside that hose most likely won't be good anymore because of cracking. If a water pump of any sort was left outside like a pressure washer that would also be broken.

  • Accidents are a big thing with the cold in my opinion and the snow that's coming and the cold won't be good for driving because it would be ice and snowy witch don't go well together. I personally don't know anyone who has been affected really but from the previous snow we had it blocked my family and I from opening the door to go outside.

  • Other issues that may arise are heaters going out and people having to leave their house for a couple of days, or pipes freezing up and people won't be able to have hot water. No one I know has been seriously affected by these temperatures, it is an inconvenience though.

  • I think the temperatures with the wind chill have been nuts lately. I think that it could cause a lot of problems with peoples cars and other forms of transportation. I also think it could mess with pipelines going to businesses and to some residential housing areas. It could affect water movement through the pipes and cause the water to freeze which would cut off the water supply to our houses.

  • A wind chill below -50 degrees is crazy and I think this could cause a lot of problems. People's cars not starting, frostbite, heaters going out, outdoor animals, and not to mention people who already live in not well heated homes not staying warm enough. If it gets this cold, things should definentally be cancelled.

    • I agree with you especially when you said that people who already live in bad areas could be affected worse and I think that some homeless people could potentially freeze to death. Places where there are more homeless people need to be aware and try and donate warm clothes.

  • I think that many issues could rise from this. Peoples heat goes out sometimes and with this kind of cold, it could hurt people badly. A lot of times teenagers don't have new cars which could lead to more accidents coming to school if it's icy and sometimes our cars won't start. You could also get sick from being this cold.
