What started as simple shoves and punches, turned into a riot between rival gang members that left 49 people dead. The drug cartel riot was located at Topo Chico Prison in Monterrey, Mexico. At 11:00 PM on Wednesday prisoners started to fight and the fight grew larger as more prisoners got involved. Flames were reported from inside the prison, as inmates ignited fires inside. The riot was under control at 1:30 AM, but the damage was severe. This hasn't been the first time prison outbreaks were recorded in northern Mexico. Nearly a month prior to the riot, 44 prisoners were killed and 30 prisoners fled from a prison in Apodaca, Mexico. Relatives of the victims are angry and demand an explanation.

1. If you were one of the prison guards, how would you have handled the situation?
2. If you were a prisoner and you saw the fighting, what would you do? Why?
3. Why do you think there were so many fatalities?
My Opinion: I were one of the prison guards, I wouldn't handle the situation by myself before calling in backup and declaring an emergency. I would then use force if I had to, in order to break up the riot. As a prisoner, I would call for help and try to stay out of the action as much as possible to avoid injury. I think the fire caused most of the deaths in the prison compared to outright fighting.

Again, good summary but you only replied once. Replying is worth ten points for each topic.
I would start to stop the fight before more people come in and go at it. I would call for more guards to help. I would just sit and watch or go back to my cell just so nothing happens to me. But if I did get hit I just fight back. Because they let them maybe eat or they where going to go outside so there be a lot of people.
Well there is obviously a fight going on so I would probably start throwing punches. I would probably sit out for a little bit and then if someone hit me then I would start to fight. I think that there was so many fatalities because about half of the prisoners are in there for assault, murder, and other things.
I also wouldn't handle the situation by myself because something like that could get very dangerous and scary.. Definatly would agree the fire caused more of the deaths but yet some of the prisoners could have to.
If I was a prison guard, I would definitely realize that it is a serious situation, contact other facility guards, and get backup ASAP. Even if I was a single man, I would use strategy and try to stop the riot even if that meant getting injured or even killed. I think that the reason there was so many deaths was because the inmates are ruthless and it took forever to stop the riot.
If I was an inmate, I would probably try to hide far far away from the other prisoners. I would definitely use common sense and know who is the most dangerous and who I should steer clear of.
I think there were a lot of fatalities because of bad response time and lack of management. Maybe next time less prisoners should be together and more guards should be placed in the prison to try to allvitate problems.
If I were a prisoner, I would definitely stay as far away as possible! I think I would know, or have an idea, on who is dangerous. I would make it my top priority to stay far away from them.
If I were a prison guard, I think I would try to isolate the situation and call for help right away. Its terrifying to see how many people were killed and I wonder how it got this out of hand!!
If I was a guard in that situation I would stay out of it until I had backup there and ready to go. I would get out of the way as a prisoner because they would probably beat me up if I was in the way.
