Mentally Disabled Man Tortured on Facebook Live?

Four African Americans were arrested after a Facebook Live video was brought to the attention of the Chicago police. In this video, these people were torturing a disabled man that was in his late teens or early 20's. The suspects were screaming various profanities at the man, cursing white people, and signaling out President Elect Donald Trump. While being tied up with his mouth taped closed, the victim was repeatedly kicked, hit, and his head was cut. In the video, he was also held at knife point and was told to curse President Elect Donald Trump. The tortured man was believed to be a peer to one of the suspects and was actually kidnapped out of Chicago. He was held hostage for roughly 24-48 hours. Although they called out Trump, the Chicago police do not believe that this was motivated politically. The suspects were thinking that this "hate-crime" would go viral. The police are trying their best to piece together this crime and are expecting to have charges filed in 24 hours.

In my opinion, I don't believe that this was the best way for the four people to gain attention or make a statement. If this was indeed motivated by politics, the people could have easily made an activist video going against Trump. And if this was for attention, their are many positive alternatives instead of kidnapping and torturing a disabled man. I don't think these four people realize how much their actions are going to effect the victim's life in the future. The disabled man could easily develop PTSD or get super depressed. Being mentally disabled, his reaction to this could be harsher than someone who isn't mentally disabled. This "hate-crime" is highly disturbing--especially because the mentally disabled man did nothing to provoke these suspects.

QUESTIONS:

1) What could have been another way for these people to go "viral" or gain attention from others?

2) How do you think the actions of these four people is going to effect the victim in the long run?

  • Well done Angelina!

  • They didn't have to stream this live they could have done something less viral. They could have protested in front of businesses and or somewhere that attracts a lot of people. I think this could effect the victim in a horrible way. He is never going to be able to walk around without turning his back and being afraid.

  • They did not have to take such a violent approach at the situation. they could have done other things like making a video of them protesting against Trump, they did not need to kidnapping and innocent person. I think that this could effect the victim in a very negative way in the future, he is always going to have a fear that he could be kidnapped again, so he will no be living in fear, because of what happened to him.

  • I think that there could've been a less harmful way of getting their point across then what they did. They could've created a Twitter or Facebook page instead of kidnapping a disabled man and torturing him. The man could have many problems that could last a lifetime including PTSD.

  • yes I've seen it it was horrible. I think they said something about him being a Donald trump voter but that's still no reason to torture him.

  • I don't think that they should've beaten a man on Facebook Live in order to get their point across. Sure people don't like that Donald Trump is our next president, but you don't need to take your anger out on innocent people. I think that they could've just keep their comments to themselves. I think that these four people will always have an impact on this man's life. I think that he will develop PTSD or some type of other problem.

    • Like many others have stated, there are definitely other ways to go viral or express your opinions on the president elect. Not everyone is going to agree with America's president elect, but we will all have to deal with it.

  • I believe these people could have found many less harmful alternatives to get attention. If they wanted to go viral they could have made a Facebook page about their opinions or a Twitter.  These alternatives would have been much better than kidnapping a disabled man and torturing him just to get your point across. I also don't think they realize the harm they may have caused for the man in the long run. He could get PTSD, depression, and so much more. It could also make his already existing disorder much worse.

  • I would honestly probably post something on Facebook (but not like torturing a guy) stating what my political views are. I think the disabled man would probably have nightmares of the situation he was put through. No one should have to go through that no matter who they are.

    • I think a facebook post would be an appropriate way to express your opinion as long as its not destructive to others. I think anyone who went through what that man has been through would have nightmares or PTSD.
