Mental Impact of Climate Change

In 1996 the Shepard family moved away from their village of around 70 people and went to a farmhouse that they would make their own. But after just 2 years later once all their work to their home was done a flood had came through. They thought that everything was going back to normal and they would get on with their lives but the flood had taken everything away. With storms, heat waves, droughts, and floods, expected to increase because of climate change people are looking at plans to help the people at risk with their mental health. Even after the disaster the fear of it happening again, worry, anxiety, depression will always be there.

How would you feel if you had to go through a flood?

Would you always be thinking about another flood happening later on?

My Answers:

If I had to go through a flood I would be very worried and not know what to do at all. I would always be thinking about if it would happen again after one time because you just never know. I would also try to plan ahead so it isn't as stressful as the time before.

  • If my family and I had to go through a flood that destroyed all of our belongings, the stress level would be extremely high.  It would definitely create a lot of tension, apprehension, and worry about rebuilding our home and restoring everything that was lost. With such a traumatic event, I think that I would always be thinking and worried about another flood or natural disaster. However, I feel that the first flood would help my family to be better prepared for the next.

    • I agree with you. It would be extremely stressful and something I hope to never go through. I think the first flood will also help my family be better prepared if another flood ever came through again.

  • If I had to deal with a flood, I would be worried and stressed out. I would try to collect as many personal items as possible and stay somewhere else. I would always be bothered and concerned for the next flood. I would try to get a plan ready for the future.

    • It would be very stressful having to go through a flood. Lots of things could be missing, destroyed, and gone. I would try to protect my things and get out of the area but it might not work. Each time there was a flood I would try my hardest to come up with a better plan.

  • If a flood was happening and I would have to go through it, I would be very scared. I would probably try to come up with a plan to keep my family and I safe first of all. If I lived in the same area I would definitely keep in the back of my mind that there is always a possibility of another flood happening.

    • It would be something terrible to go through and I hope I never have to experience it. I would also come up with a plan to keep everyone safe. Also always keeping the thought of another flood happening would be in my mind.

  • I would be sad because more than likely all of your stuff is destroyed/gone. Only if i lived where one could reach where i was, but more than likely yes i would think about it happening again.

    • I agree a flood can ruin everything and you will never know how much it can take. Even though I don't live in a common area of flooding I would still worrying about it after it has happened one time.

  • I would be worried because a flood can ruin everything that own and you might not have a place to live after the flood. I probably would but I wouldn't try to think about it constantly. If i knew a flood was coming then I would really think about it happening.
