Elementary school in Baltimore is replacing detentions with meditation. The misbehaving students are sent to the Mindful Moment room witch is a warm, brightly light room. The room has floor pillows, yoga mats and the scents of essential oils. Foundation of staff members are there helping the kids to talk about what led to the dismissal of class. The staff also teach the kids to do breathing exercises to calm them down. The meditation doesn't cure the kids' conflicts, but it has had a wonderful effect on their learning environment and productivity. The meditation also teaches the kids to be mindful and calm.
1) Do you think meditation is better than detention, when dealing with misbehaving kids? Why/why not?
2) Would you want a Mindful Moment room in Harlan too? Do you think it would be good? Would you use it?
I think this is a great and creative idea. The meditation teaches the kids how to be calm and that is a important ability in life. In detention the kids are just there and usually that might not teach them anything more that it's boring. The meditation room would be awesome, if we had it in Harlan too. Students could go there and calm themselves before tests or to prevent arguments and such. I think I would use the room sometimes just to relax.

Great story choice and well done!
I dont think this will help the kids do better next time, I think it would actually have a worse effect. I would rather have that than detention because it would be better which is why i dont think it would be any better
I think that it really depends on what the kid did to be put in detention for. For children who have so much energy in class and disrupts the class, this meditation room could be really good for them. But there are other children who misbehave and I don't think that this meditation room would really work for them. I think I would want one just to be able to relax and take a break from the stress from school.
I agree. But how do you think the other kids feel like when they have a detention while the others have meditation? Would that be unfair to the kids when they don't get the same treatment?
I don't this is better because detention is for disciplining kids for doing something wrong and yoga they might actually have fun and not be getting in trouble. I wouldn't if you do something wrong you deserve to be disciplined for it.
What if the teachers would teach the meditation as a class, would that help prevent kids getting in trouble? Do you think that the kids are unable to realize the true meaning of the meditation?
No. because the kids could have fun and they might like it and cause them to do more stuff that gets them in trouble, you'll basically be rewarding them
No I don't. I mean if it was for detention then yes bad idea but just for anybody to use then no. and I would not use it
I don't think it would be a bad thing if the kids enjoy the meditation if they understand why they're put in there. Like they shouldn't just straight away enjoy it, I mean like they could start doing the meditation on their own, and not get in trouble later since they have learned how to act. Do you think the same way? Do you feel like the teachers and the parents would like to have the meditation room?
For little kids, this method would be good. They would be able to talk things out and work on calming themselves down instead of using harsh punishment that they don't really understand. The room probably wouldn't work in a high school, mostly because students would dismiss what they learned and continue what they were doing because the punishment wasn't harsh.
Do you think that the parents feel the same way? Would it be good if the little kids had both the meditation and a detention?
