March Madness Controversy

This year's March Madness has had lots of stories by its name. A few are many Cinderella stories and buzzer-beaters. But those aren’t the stories making all the headlines, it's the unequal amenities given to the Women in the bubble. It all started with weight rooms, the women were given a set of dumbbells and a pile of yoga mats. The men were easily supplied with multiple power racks with Olympic bars and weights. After people took to social media the NCAA Vice President Lynn Holzman made a statement “ I acknowledge the differences in amenities provided in each tournament but that is caused to space limitations in the women's facilities.” As shown in lots of videos seen by the public you can see that there is lots of extra space, which is where all the equipment could have gone. The women's meals are even different compared to the men's. Women's meals looked like banquet Salisbury steak tv dinner and in the picture below, it looks like the men’s meals were catered from restaurants. Both men and women were given a gift box for making the tournament. If you can believe it the men were given a very large box with what looks like an endless amount of things. The women received maybe 10 items. Yes, 10 items given to you are very generous but it's all about treating women equal to men. Women have been working for equal everything men have for so many years and this just shows how we are really treated.

In my opinion, this is completely wrong. Women should not be treated this way because of what they circle on a piece of paper. At the start, the NCAA should have just given both genders the same things and they could have completely avoided this altogether. I believe just because they don’t bring in the same amount of money they should get different things. It should not take everyone on social media to make a post about it before they do something to change it.

Do you think the women were treated right?

What would you have done better if you were president of the NCAA?

  • Well done overall Erica! Great topic choice! I do think you could have replied a couple more times on the page 1.

  • I think that the women should be treated just like the men. I don’t think it is fair that the men get better food, better workout equipment, and more things from the tournament. I would have made sure that everybody was treated equally and had the same amount of equipment to workout with and received the same items from the tournament.

  • I agree that women were difienitely not treated as well as the men that were playing in the games and that it should've been changed when it occured, however it is to late to change that anymore. I think that it should have been fair the whole time while the games were going on.

  • I think this is wrong and that the women were treated unequally and should have the things that men basketball players have. If I was the president of the NCAA I would have fix this if it had happened, but I would of also just made it fair. Women in sports should be treated equal because they are also athletes.

  • While it is a fact that girl's basketball doesn't recieve as much attention as men's basketball, they should still be treated equally. They should be allowed the same food, gym space, and fan gear. It's unfair to limit what the women receive. It shouldn't be about money, it should be equal.

  • Obviously the women weren't treated right, but what the players get is depending on how much they bring in. The mens basketball tournment is more well known and watched instead of the womens and that is how it has always been. Since the men bring in more money they are rewarded with better gifts. If I were the president of the NCAA I would porbably do the same thing. Everything revolves around money and the mens tournment brings in more.

  • Based off of these images, I think it is obvious that women are not being treated as equally as men. Men get more workout equipment, more food, and less items from their gift box. If I was the president of the NCAA, I would have given the women the same things as the men, and then they could have avoided this problem entirely.

  • I do not think the women were treated fairly especially because they said it was due to space limitations but people took videos and proved them wrong. If i were the president I would have done better. it should not be about the money. I would have made it fair or split the cost so they can have the same things.

  • The women were not treated equally I agree. Was anything done about it or was it just posted on social media instead of taking it up with someone more professional? Yeah, women's basketball doesn't rake in as much money and men's but they should still be treated the same.

  • Based off of these images, it is showing that the women are not getting treated very equally. The women in the NCAA were not treated equally as the men in the NCAA, because it looked like the men got dinners while it looked like the women got microwave dinners, and much more.  I think that the women should have gotten treated more equally as the men, rather than what they got.
