Christopher Bergan traveled from Norway to Florida to surprise his father-in-law, Richard Dennis for his birthday. Bergan knocked on the front door during the evening and Dennis did not know who it was. A few hours later Bergan knocked again, but on the back door. When Dennis opened the door, Bergan jumped out of the bushes and scared him. It was then when Dennis shot and killed Bergan. He shot him in the heart and killed him instantly. Officials say it was completely and accident and charges have not been pressed.

1. Do you think there should be charges pressed?
2. If you were family to Christopher Bergan would you still be in contact with Richard Dennis after he shot and killed him?

  • Your summary is very brief with no personal thoughts. The story is not a good choice as it is a murder story which I tell people to stay away from. Be sure to capitalize key words in your title as well. You also didn't reply enought to student comments.

  • In my opinion no because you he was in shock and would not want to kill this guy. I would try to find a strengh inside myself and forgive him.

  • I don't think they should press charges because it was self defense. Richard was startled and didn't know who was in his yard. I would still speak to him because Richard was just defending himself. You could also say that this was a "Stand Your Ground" type of situation. Christopher startled and potentially threatened Richard.

  • I don't believe that charges should be pressed. This is because if anything, it would just tear the family apart even more, which is not what is need in times of tragedy.  If I was family of Christopher Bergan seeing Dennis would be a mixed bag. Although I wouldn't blame him for what he did, seeing him would bring up sad thoughts.

  • I don't believe any charges should be pressed. He was scared and didn't know who would be knocking so late at night. Jumping out of the bushes and suprising him would have most likely looked like he was about to be attacked. He was only using self defense because he feared for his own life. I would be devistated and might not talk to him for awhile out of pure shock of the situation. I may end up talking to him again since he's also family too.

  • No, I believe that if anything I believe that it is Bergan's fault because if he knew Dennis was home the first time he knocked and he didn't answer then he shouldn't have gone to the backdoor. I get he wanted it to be a suprise however, he should have called someone to let someone know that he was coming so something didn't happen.

  • I don't think charges should be pressed considering Dennis was scared and it was an accident. If I was part of Christopher Bergan's family I probably wouldn't talk to Dennis for a while or ever again considering that I wouldn't actually be related to Richard Dennis and Christopher Bergan would've been my only tie to him.

  • I don't think that there should be charges pressed since it was an accident and because in any case that could be seen as self-defense/ stand your ground. I would still be in contact with him because it's not like he was planning to kill Bergan in the first place meaning it was technically not his fault.

  • No since it was a complete accident and he had no intentions to shoot him. Yes I would still be in contact because Richard probably feels horible about himself and his family not being in contact with him would make it even worse.

  • I don't think that there should be any charges pressed because this was a complete accidents. He had a gun on him because he didn't know who it was and he was just trying to protect himself, but everything was an accident. I would still be in contact with him, eventhough he shot his own sun,  it was still aaccident.
