On August 7th a Southern Texas man was arrested for stealing 1.2 million dollars worth of fajitas. Gilberto Escaramilla had been ordering fajitas with county money inted for the County Juvenile Justice Department for over nine years. He would place the order for the fajitas and then upon their delivery he would sell them to pre-arranged buyers without his employers or fellow workers ever knowing about this. Finnaly after these nine years, Gilberto took the day off work and someone else had to recieve the order, this person noted that the department doesn't serve fajitas and never has despite the delivery man saying that he had been delivering fajitas for many years, Escaramilla was fired right away and later arrested. He was released on bail before being arrested again for more crimes. Officials have determined that Escaramilla has stolen 1,251,578 dollars worth of fajitas, and for this he has been sentenced to 50 years.
How do you think that Esaramilla was able to get away with this for nine years before being caught?
I think that he made sure he was always the one recieving the deliveries so that he could never be discovered.
What is your opinion on the 50 year sentence? Is it too long, too short, or a good length?
I think that for the amount of money he stole 50 years is the bare minimum that he should have been sentenced, I don't think it would be unreasonable for him to recieve a longer sentence.

Great job Sam!
Just by being sneaky and people trusted him since he was working there for 9 years. I think it's too long. I think that he should have been forced to repay the money and have like a 20 year sentence.
I think that nobody noticed it because compared to 1.2 million dollars, 1 fajita isn't even noticable so it is understandable how you could get away.
The accounting done by the county was probably not done very well, and there might not have been an audit done. I think they should have gave him the option to pay back the money plus puntive damages, since he is not a violent criminal.
He had to be recieving the shipments, its not like you could just steal 1.2 million dollars of fajitas spotless until he was caught. I don't know what to think because this isn't a crime you will hear about all the time.
Esaramilla obviously covered up his tracks very well so that the police or anyone else, for that matter, could catch on to what he was doing. I think the 50 year sentence is a nice length, it's not so long that he's dying in prison but it's not so short that he doesn't learn his lesson.
I think he was just very careful and never took any days off. I also think that even though he made a stupid decsion he was very smart. I think that the 50 year sentence is a good length of time for him to serve. After all he did basically steal 1.2 million dollars.
1.) He may have not taken very many days off of work, and if he did he made sure that nobody came when he was off. Also, he was the one recieving and distributing all of the fajitas in secret. 2.) I think it is a pretty decent length, expecially if he stole that much money. Also, because it will teach him a lesson.
I agree with you. People probably just thought that they were normal packages and was nothing. If he was always getting the packages himself, most people probably didn't even have knowledge of the deliveries. It is possible that the 50 years is a little much, although there is really no way we can ensure that right when he gets out, he won't just go right back to it. He stole a huge amount of money, so there is really no way to repay that.
I hadn't thought about what you said, if people did see the deliveries, it probably looked like normall packages, nothing out of the ordinary. Personally I think that 50 years is a good length, that is unless he is able to pay it off, but as you pointed out he stole a lot of money worth of fajitas, so I don't see him paying it off.
