Man Saves Girl with a Nutcracker

88-year-old Korean War veteran, Leonard Miller, was just chilling at his house in Perry Township, Ohio, when one of his neighbors, a young girl at the age of 13, came frantically knocking on his door asking for help. Her younger sister was being attacked by her families pitbull. The dog was attached to the girl’s upper left arm. Having forgotten his baseball bat, Leonard opted for a Nutcracker yard ornament to ward off the dog. After whacking the pitbull several times on the back, the dog finally backed off. The young girl is now in the recovery process after having surgery for her injuries according to a friend of the family, and the pitbull has been surrendered to the county dog warden.

What do you think caused the pitbull to attack the young girl?

I think that maybe the girls were playing with the dog and during that they may have taunted the dog with the toy, causing it to get riled up and attack her.

Do you think the breed of pitbulls are to blame in situations like these? Why or Why Not?

I do not think so, because even if they are known to be an aggressive dog, it can also be the human that sets them off. They have emotions too, and can get angered easily, probably first resulting in barking, or maybe the dog has been put in a situation where it feels extremely anxious and that it needs to defend itself.

  • Great job Ania!

  • I agree with you that the girls were probably just playing with the dog and teasing him with his toy but wouldn't give it to him so he got mad and tried to get it. No, I don't think the whole breed of pitbulls should be blamed because this was one dog that got mad over a toy probably or something small like that, but there are some really nice pitbulls so the whole breed can't be blamed.

    • I completely agree with you. This attack was an accident in my eyes and the blame should not all be put on the dog.

  • I think that the girls were playing with the dog then it attacked, or the girls were taunting the dog making it mad then it attacked. I don't think that the pitbulls are to blame because there are plenty of harmless pitbulls in the world. How the pitbull acts depends on the people surrending it.

  • I think that the dog could have just been a vilolant dog and attacked her she might have been hitting it or petting it to hard and the dog got made and grabbed on to her. I don't think that dog is to blame the girls probelly did something to upset that dog that would make it attacked her like it did.

  • I think that the girl may have been playing rough with the dog. Most dogs especially if you raised them don't attack you since they grew up around you. I do not think that the breed itself is the reaosn for this attack. Lack of proper training and possible beating are probably why this dog attacekd.

    • The main reason I can think of that would cause the dog to attack the young girl, whether that be on accident or not, would be that the girls were taunting the dog with something that it wanted, like a toy. The dog perhaps leapt to catch the toy but caught the girl's instead, assuming that they were pretty short in height.

  • I think the dog got riled up from either playing or taunting. All dogs are different and all dogs have different triggers that get them either really happy, excited or mad. Pitbulls are such big dogs that they can be very harmful to anyone.

    • With the proper training, however, pitbulls can be just as loving and good as any other dog. Some pitbull owners neglect to train them well and events like the one in this situation unfortunately happen. I really like how you brought up the fact that all dogs are different and have different triggers for their emotions.

  • i think it might be becouse they are not listing to the dog when i dog gralws it sometimes me it wants you to stop what you are doing to it or it might have gotten to carried away with playing and forgot he was playing

i think it all depends on how the dog is raise and treated if it is being abused or thought how  to be agresive and it depends on the kids some kids thing that when a gralw is a bad gralw and it means you need to backaway they think that its a playful gralw but not all kids are like that and i think it also dpends on if it is a puppy to
