Japanese man Iwao Hakamada was convicted of a quadruple murder in 1966.Thursday the local court decided to re open his case, the court suspended his death sentence and released Hakamada after DNA testing indicated key evidence against him may have been faked. He was originally convicted in 1966 of killing his boss at a soybean processing company, along with the boss's wife and two children. Hakamada 'confessed' after 20 days of interrogation by police. He retracted the confession during the trial and told the court that police had beaten and threatened him. According to his lawyers, recent forensic tests show no match between Hakamada's DNA and samples taken from clothing the prosecution alleges was worn by the murderer."

How would you feel if you were convicted of murder and no one believed you?

Why do you think the police fabricated the key evidence against him?

  • Great job!!

  • That would be a terrible situation to be put in jail for something that you didn't do.  I'm glad they figured it out after 48 years.

  • I would be frustrated and mad. I don't know what the police were thinking.

  • It would suck very much and I would want people to do anything they could to prove me not guilty, if they framed me like that when I was proved innocent I would sue the police that framed me.

  • I feel so bad for this guy because he suffered all those years in prison and he was completely innocent

  • We've been learning about 60's culture in English class, most of which dealing with racial attitudes of the time. The police simply didn't like the guy because he was Japanese, so they wanted him gone for good. It would've been horrible to have been the guy, though. Being threatened and unfairly charged, I wonder what his thoughts are now that he's released.

    • That's a good point, it would make sense if they did do that just because of racism.

  • I would feel terrible I would never do something like that but if I so happened to be convicted of it I would be very upset. They might have thought he has done some other bad things.

  • If I was convicted I don't know what I would do, but I think I would keep fighting to prove I didn't do anything.

  • I think that this is a crazy story. if he didn't do it I cant imagine going to jail for that long for something you didn't do. I think that if they had better technology back then they would of found out that it wasn't him. I think that he is happy that he is out but I also think that he would be mad cause he went to jail for something he may not of done
