Man on Facebook Live Gets Shot

Rodney Hess, 36 year old, of Tennessee was shot and killed by Police authorities on March 16th, 2017. He was shot while making a Facebook Live video. Rodney was encountered by police when his car was parked perpendicularly in the middle of the highway. In the video, there is no real footage that shows him being shot by the officer. Although, you can hear a slight shriek coming from a man, and then the camera starts to jerk. When asked why he shot Rodney, the officers says that he didn't follow his commands. The family of Rodney has been sending messages out to Facebook to try to find witnesses to prove that the officer is guilty of manslaughter.

Questions:

If you were the family of this man what would you think about him being on Facebook Live while he died?

What do you think drove the officer to shooting Rodney? Do you think this will become a part of #BlackLivesMatter ?

Answers: In my opinion, it's kinda like crazy that this guy was just coincidentally on Facebook live when he got shot and died. It would be very disturbing to watch and I would honestly be fired up. The officer could've had something against African American's which would've led it to be a part of Black Lives Matter, but it most likely just happened because he didn't follow his commands.

  • Well done Cierra! All of your comments were done on two days instead of three.

  • I think it would show the world really what happened to my family member. You would also have a lot of evidence against the police officer. I don't know why the officer shot Rodney. I think that this will become a major part of the movement black lives matter.

  • its crazy to to think that one moment he was on Facebook live and a couple of moments later he was shot and killed. I would be mad, because like you said the officer could have done something different to control Rodney without shooting and killing him. the officer could have had a problem with american Americans and that is why he shot him, but it do think that this with become part of the #BlackLivesMatter.

  • First I would question why he was on his phone in the first place in the middle of the road. I don't think we will know unless there is a legitimate witness that can say what happened. It most likely will be used as a part of Black Lives Matter. I don't necessarily agree with it, but until I know what really happened, I don't know.

  • I think it would be a terrible way to go out and the family would have a hard time dealing with such a tragic. I'm not really sure what would make him do this. The officer had no reason to, so yes I think it will become part of #BlackLivesMatter.

  • I think that because he was on camera when he was shot, that would help give some evidence against the officer and it's also kind of scary and sad that his last moments were seen by all of the people watching him on Facebook. I think that the officer did this because the man wasn't following his orders, but that is still no reason to shoot and kill someone. I do think that this will become a part of #BlackLivesMatter because it was another shooting of a black man by a police officer.

  • If I was his family I would be very upset. The police officer shouldn't have shot him for starts but the officer should have made sure that there wasn't a camera on. I don't think that I can really tell why the Police Officer did this because I don't the whole story but I think it could have been because he didn't follow commands. I do think that this will be a part of #BlackLivesMatter.

  • If the man was parked in the middle of the road like that while on Facebook live I am assuming he was going through with a scheme. I don't necessarily know if it was necessary to shot the man since there was no audio or video that showed any evidence. Depending on his race, I am guessing this will add to the list of "racist" police officers.

  • I think it would be horrible, watching footage of a relative being killed would be the worst. I understand that the man wasn't following orders or commands, but I dont think that is a good reason to shoot and kill the man. Police officers need to handle themselves better.

    • I agree. Police officers need to know when they are taking things too far. It would be really scary watching the footage. They are probably going to have to watch the footage to know what happened.
