Man Moves Into Dog Shelter

When Scott Poore couldn't figure out why Queen wasn't being adopted he did the only logical thing; packed his things and moved into the dog shelter. Queen is a 3 year old terrier mix who has spent over 400 days in the Great Plains Society for The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Poore has dedicated his life to the animals of their shelter, including starting "Mission Driven," an organization that helps animals. "I just can't figure out why she's not getting adopted.. She's just been slowly declining in the shelter environment." Not only does Poore sleep in the shelter, but also works in the small kennel space with his canine friend. "She's a perfect example of what happens when dogs go unadopted," Poore said. "Queen is really speaking for all long term shelter dogs. They're kind of the forgotten ones." Scotts mission is to make sure she, and other dogs alike, don't go forgotten. Check out these links for more information and interviews: CNN; video  Fox News; article

Thought provoking questions:

1. Do you think that by staying in the kennels Scott Poore is helping Queen?

I believe that it's good that the dog has a person around, but I definitely think her decline is because of the environment. Concrete walls and a small cot would be enough to make anyone, dog or human, very unhappy over time.

2. If you were in Poores place do you think you would do something so drastic as to move into the kennels?

Personally I think it would be a fun experience while providing a dog a little joy for a while. I wouldn't want to stay there very long.

3. What are some other ways people could help out without adopting a dog and which of these would you be most likely to do?

Donating to local shelters would be a really good idea. They can never have too much dog food. Just spending some time in the kennel or taking a dog for a walk would be very good too, being as they don't get a lot of attention. I think I would probably be most likely to spend an hour or two just playing with or walking some dogs.

  • Well done Emma!

  • From experience with my dog, dogs loves people and love to be around them all the time. I think that was Scott is doing will help the dog because he is probably very loney and depressed and just needs attention. I think I would, if I worked in an animal shelter and deticated my life to helping animals I'm sure I would do the same.

  • I would think that it is helping Queen to a degree, but I think being moved to a different environment would help her more. I wouldn't do anything as drastic as move in to a kennel. I know that in some shelters people are welcome to come play with the dogs just to cheer them up.

  • 1.) I do think that by Scott Poore staying in the kennels with Queen is helping Queen because it gives the dog a reason to be happy, and helps remove the fact that she lives in a 'bad' environment. I agree that concrete walls and a small cot would be way more than enough to make anyone or anything very unhappy over time.

  • I think it is helping Queen I know my dog gets excited when I come home from school and I can't imagine a dog without this feeling. I don't think I would move into a kennel. I would visit and play with the dogs instead. Donating to locale shelters is a good idea, I also think you could volunteer to help clean up the dogs kennels.

  • i think staying in the kennel with the dog and always being there for it would help the dog a lot, kennels arent a good place for a dog if you want it to stay happy because its uncofortable and there isnt enough space for it. i would never stay in a kennel but i would visit the dog every once and awhile to see how its doing and make sure its getting everyhing it needs.

  • I think its good that the dog will have a person around because then he will get the attention that he needs and he will always have someone looking over him to make sure everything goes good. Personally I would just adopt the dog for myself and take it to my house, I don't think I would move into the dogs shelter.

    • If Poore was staying at his house at night and he adopted her, he would only see Queen for a few hours. Since he's at the shelter he gets to see her at all times. I feel like working at a shelter would be really hard because you empathize so much for the animals that you just want to adopt them all.. But if you adopt one then where does it stop?

  • Yes, I think Scott is helping Queen, but also the shelter is not a great place for her, she needs a home and a richer environment. I don't believe I would move the kennels but I would try to adopt the dog, especially considering how long the dog has been in the kennel. I would contact friends of mine to see if they wanted a dog, and I think I'd be more likely to get my friends the dog.

    • Talking to people you know about the dog is a good idea. It makes the whole situation more personal by telling someone about the problem face-to-face. Seeing a dogs photo stapled to a pole is desensitizing, but seeing the emotion of the person who's seen firsthand is different. Thanks for the comment Kyle!
