Mammoths to be Cloned?

Scientists have found a preserved female mammoth in an ice sheet on the Lyakhovsky Islands off the coast of northeast Russia. The scientists poked the mammoth and liquid blood came out. The liquid blood may be used to clone the mammoth. Researchers from the Northeast Federal University are working with Sooam Biotech Research Foundation to clone mammoths. The Sooam Biotech Research Foundation is headed by Hwang Woo-suk who has cloned the world's first puppy.

Mammoth

Do you think they will be able to clone the mammoth and keep it alive? How cool do you think it would be to see a real mammoth in person? Any other thoughts? I'd love to see these prehistoric creatures alive and in person, I'd also love to see a saber toothed tiger.

  • Well done!!

  • This sounds cool! If someone was to successfully clone and keep alive a prehistoric animal it would be a first. If we started doing this I don't know if it would be a good or bad thing. We don't really know much about the behaviors of most extinct animals, so that might be hard to handle.

    • Yes, it would. We wouldn't know exactly how they would react to the food we give them, or the air. Global warming could effect them too; it has worsened since they've been alive.

  • I think that it would be super cool to see a real mammoth in person!  I think that they're cool animals because they are soo big.   I don't know if all the cloning will work right, and keep the mammoth alive.  I do hope they can because I do think that this would be a thing that a lot of people would like.

    • The cloning may not, hopefully they can get it to work though. I agree with you, I think a lot of people would love to see a mammoth.

  • It is pretty incredible that science could do this. With all the endangered and extinct animals and if they could keep them alive, it would change the world.

  • it seems as if it would be impossible to clone and even if they do clone it, they have to keep it alive. I don't think there is enough nature for them to stay alive in todays day and age.

    • It would be interesting if they  could clone a mammoth that has been frozen for ages. It's surprising how there was still liquid blood inside of it too. Like, you would think that it would be empty.

      • It is weird that the blood was still liquid. The scientists think there is a chemical in their blood like in Arctic animals that keeps their blood warm.

  • I read an article like this, they were cloning animals that had gone extinct. There are a lot of positives to this, but a lot of the time the clones don't survive. I think it would be cool to see a creature that was once extinct, and I hope some day we will be able to do this.
