Major Movie Makers Logos

Many of you have seen movies in which the beginning depicts a picture and the name of the company who made the movie, but have you ever really wondered why the pictures are what they are. For example:

Walt Disney Pictures

Walt Disney Pictures did not use a logo for many years. In 1985, however, they decided that the Magic Castle was a perfect fit.

MGM

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's logo was made in 1916. It is a lion surrounded by film. Written on the film is the phrase "Ars Gratia Artis" meaning "art for art's sake". One popular movie made by this company is The Wizard of Oz.

Warner Brothers Pictures

Warner Brothers logo is a shield with WB on it. The shield is floating against a blue cloudy sky. The Logo was changed many times but this is the current logo. The logo is usually accompanied by an 8 chord tune followed by a orchestral piece. The piece is part of the song "As Love Goes By" from the ever popular movie Casablanca.

Paramount

The Paramount logo is very popular. The Majestic Mountain, as it is called, is very similar to Ben Lomond Mountain in Utah. That mountain is thought to be the inspiration. The first Paramount logo had 24 stars. 2 for every actor that was signed when the company opened. It now only has 22 stars.

DreamWorks

One of DreamWorks principle founders was Steven Spielberg. Spielberg always wanted the logo to be a boy fishing from the moon. Once he saw the logo he was taken with it's design and it was the logo from then on.

I thought this was pretty interesting. What are some of your thoughts about it?

  • I really like all the different logos and it is interesting to learn about them why some companies have them what they mean.

  • I think that is really cool. I think that there is a lot of cool movie logos. My favorite is the lion one. Dream works was my least favorite one.

  • i think these are frickin sweet. i never knew this about any of these but good job with all the information you gathered

  • I think that you forgot one 20th century fox but i think that this is really cool and i am sure that everybody has seen all of these major motion picture company logos.

  • That is really interesting. I see these all the time and never really take time to think about what they all mean! I should pay more attention to different logos and things. I find that very interesting!

  • I really like "art for art's sake" on MGM's logo I even notice the words there, that's cool. Dreamworks is still my favorite logo though

  • This is very interesting. I've never really thought about it before, considering you only see it for a few seconds before the movie and barely have the time to read the words in the logo.

  • I didn't know that there is so much to the logos. I am a big movie watcher and i never knew about the logos.

  • I can honestly say i never really cared about what these were about.Probably the most interesting one that read was Walt Disney. I just find it funny how we all know and love this extremely popular logo and have known it for so long. But it didn't come out until 1985

  • I never really thought about the companys logos but it makes sense that they would all have certain reasons.
