Madden video game tournament turns into a mass shooting

On Sunday in Jacksonville, a mass shooting took place during a Madden video game tournament at GLHF Game Bar. Two were killed, Taylor Robertson, 27 and Elijah Clayton 22, along with 10 others who were injured. Luckily there were 7 firefighters near the scene and they were immediately given treated in the streets and courtyard. David Katz at age 24 was identified to be the gunman who had also attended the venue. He was said to have used 2 legally purchased handguns and had later taken his own life in a restaurant. David Katz had also been a part of these tournaments and won one earlier in 2017. David had been on medication of antipsychotic, used to treat schizophrenia and two antidepressants. His father believed David didn't ever show any signs of schizophrenia. As David was 12 his parents were going through a divorce and had disagreements about how his mental issues should be handled. Motives are still being investigated.

Do you think mental illness, drugs, and/or child trauma could have been a trigger for possible motives?

David Katz was able to legally purchase two handguns used during the shooting. Does this differ your opinion on gun laws?

What do you believe should be done with security for events like these?

  • I do think it was possiblly childhood trauma, then again it could have been drug abuse.

It does not change my opinion of needing a clean history, a gun licence and to be at least in their 30s in order to buy a gun.

    metal detector maybe.

  • I do believe that mental illness, drugs, and or child trauma could have triggered Katz's actions. The fact that this man was allowed to legally purchase these guns is ridiculous. I do not see any reason why American citizens should be allowed to own guns, especially not a heavily medicated mentally ill person. I do understand what some people mean when they say guns dont kill people, but I personally value other people's lives over the hobbies of gun owners. I think that metal detectors should be required for events like this to keep everyone safe.

  • Potentiallly the drugs could have been a possible motive for David's actions. But I think that it was more of his child truma, or maybe the fact that these other 2 men were competing against him and ahead of him in a game and he got jealous. No this does not differ on my opinion of guns, because guns do not kill people. People kill people. And if David was able to purchase these guns, then his background history must have been good enough to purchase these guns. At events like this it would be wise to have officers on duty, along with some undercover cops as well. I think it would be wise so that it could potentially orevent some of these actions.

  • Good topic choice! Be sure to include personal thoughts within your summary. You also didn't comment to anyone which is worth 20 points.

  • I think mental illness and child trauma was factor for his motive. He was on all of these perscriptions and it could have set him off. I think that gun laws should just be more strict because some people use them for self defense and don't use them unless they have to. For bigger events like this I think they need more and better security just in case situations like this were to happen ever again.

  • I do think his mental illness may have been a possible reason because of this shooting. Gun laws should be stricter and mentally ill should have to take a test to have a gun. They should have better security,

  • I believe that David's mental illness could have triggered this shooting. You can never be sure what is going through a persons mind if they have a mental disease. I think gun laws can be stronger to help prevent events like these from happening again. They can also have a stronger and better security system for large events like these.

    • Flordia got an F for their gun laws this year since they don't require a permit or liscense, but later on they banned the possesion of bump fire stocks for those mentally unfit and changed the age to 21 from 18.

  • I think that a majority of mass shooting are caused by mental illness, drugs, or what has happened in someones past. I also think that if someone is holding a large event, they need to ensure that there is proper security so stuff like this is less likely to happen.
