Have you ever seen the show "Little house on the praire?" Well if you have chances are you remember the story of Mary Ingalls then and how she went blind. Her blindness, which the story said, was due to scarlet fever. Well now doctors are questioning if that was the real reason. They say that scarlet fever doesn't make you blind so doctors did research on her background. The doctors determined the disease was called viral meningoencephalitis which causes inflammation of the brain and can cause inflammation of the optic nerve that can result in slow blindness.
So why did her sister change the story? Why wouldnt they just tell the truth about what it actually was? What do you think about this surprise in history?

I think that the family probably didn't know that it was caused by a different disease. The medical technology back then wasn't as advanced as it is now.
I loved the Little House on the Prairie series! I don't get why the scientists have to go off and ruin the awesomeness of the story by saying "Oh, this wasn't the real cause..it was ......." I mean, seriously? That is interesting though, you do have to wonder why. Maybe they didn't know what it was, I mean it took several years for this to come about, so back then they wouldn't have been able to find out.
I don't think that she necessarily lied about what happened to her sister, but that she simply stated what she thought was the most likely cause. After all medicine at that time was not at all advanced.
I don't really care why she changed the story I still read her books and watch the shows so I am pretty glad with how the story was and if they change it I am going to be really mad.
I dont understand why they would lie about something like this. But you never know maybe some was wrongly informed.
I dont really think that her sisters lied and changed the story. They are just finding this out now and these stories were wrote a long time ago. It doesn't surprise me that they didn't know this until now because they didnt have the technology back then.
Well they didn't quite have the technology to diagnose things like we do today. I'm doubting they knew what viral meningoencephalitis was.
I remember reading this book in 6th grade i think or 5th! I see that the movie is on all the time too. I wonder why they just did this research and not when in came out a long time ago. But i agree with you why would someone lie about it?
I think she kept it as is to keep the story as it was when she was growing up.
i don't think she intentionally lied...Doctors probably didn't even know of the disease yet at that time.
