Linebacker Voted Homecoming Queen

Seventeen year old Alicia Woollcott just accepted her crown as homecoming queen, but that isn't the only thing she's known for at her school. She's also the school's only female varsity football player, playing linebacker on the field. Ever since 6th grade, when she was a cheerleader, she's noticed how intriguing the game is and decided to play the next year. Woollcott is also president of her school's power lifting team. She placed third in her weight class in the state, squatting 300 pounds, benching 175, and dead lift 335. Her goal is to make it to state with her team and to get the most out of her senior year with no regrets.

How would you react if your daughter wanted to play football?

Are you at all surprised that Woollcott plays linebacker? How?

If I had a daughter ask me if she could play football, I would immediately be concerned. I'm all for equal opportunities for girls though and I'd probably be fine with it after the initial blow. I was really surprised that this girl was playing linebacker. I've heard of girls playing quarter back or kicker, but never linebacker. I was even more surprised by how strong she it. There's no way I could even come close to lifting that much.

  • Well done overall but you could have replied a few more times.

  • If my daughter asked me to play football I would make sure it was something she would be dedicated to before allowing her to try out. I would fully support her decision and be a little concerned for her safety, but she has a right to play what she wants. I'm not surprised that she plays linebacker because women have many equal opportunities and can do just about anything a man can do.

  • If I had a daughter that wanted to play football, I wouldn't love the idea. It's not typical for girls in the sense that she would be more likely to get hurt and that she might not be accepted by everyone. In the beginning I would probably attempt steer her interests in a different direction, but if she was persistent, I would support her because she has a right to play.

It is surprising to hear that a girl is a varsity linebacker for her high school football team. Female kickers aren't uncommon, and I've even heard of (and done a forum post on) a female quarterback, but a linebacker is a completely different story. However, she is very strong for a girl, and it sounds like she can handle it.

    • If  I was her mother, and I knew how much she could lift, I don't think I'd be surprised that she wanted to join football. I would probably try to get her to do a different sport, but there's no stopping someone who is determined.

  • If I had a daughter that wanted to play football I would let her do it, if  she can stay healthy and put so much work into it. I'm surprised because she put so much work into it and look how far she made it she is a linebacker for her varsity football team, I'm shocked from this because she made it this far.

  • I would let her play. I would be nervous to let her play though because she could get injured very easily. Yes I am surprised but she works hard and is obvious good. It might be ironic because maybe most people think that a linebacker should be a big, strong player and even thought shes a girl she is strong and big.

    • I would let my daughter play too, I also would be nervous and a little scared. I wonder if people who don't know her and watch her play know that she's a girl...

  • 1. I would tell her she can do whatever she wants I would support her either way. In my opinion that's awesome.

    2. I am surprised because that is a difficult position especially for someone who doesn't have the male body type and athletic ability.

  • 1 - If I had a daughter that wanted to be on the football team I would be very proud. I would obviously be worried about the safety of her, but I would encourage her because women everywhere shouldn't be scared of a sport traditionally played by men.

    • It is a scary thing, especially if the girl is small and petite. I also have heard of female football players, but not playing as linebacker. I was really surprised that she's also the president of her powerlifting team
