Lightning Strike at Rwanda Church Kills 16

So it was just another ordinary day in Rwanda for many people. They got up and went to church, but it was storming on this Sunday. Those people were just sitting in church when a bolt of lightning struck the building killing 16 of the members. 140 people were injured and taken to hospitals. 17 of the 140 people are seriously injured whereas the others were let go from the hospital. It also mentioned in the article that deaths from lightning strikes are quiet frequentin the country, since there are so many hills and mountains in the country. For example, it said earlier in the week that 18 students were struck my lighting, and only one student died. Another example, it said that in 2016 there were 30 deaths, 61 injured, and 48 livestock killed by lightning. So for the people in Rwanda this isn't anything new but for other people around the world we should do something to help.

Questions:

1) What should the government of Rwanda do to help the people, or what should the rest of the world do?

I think the government or world should be putting lightning rods on buildings and houses. Also, just build big metal towers in the middle of no where so those get struck not houses.

2) If you lived in Rwanda what is one thing you would do when it is storming? Why?

If I lived in Rwanda and it was storming, I would stay in my house because that is where I feel the most safe. Unless I have a steel house then I would try to find somewhere more protective.

  • Well done!

  • 1. I think they should place rod out there to abosob the lighting and direct them away from people.

    2. I would be inside but not close anything that is metal also in nuilding that not tall.

  • 1) I think lightning rods on buildings could help a lot and maybe the government can set higher standards for the houses in relation to the lighting and other natural catastrophes.

    2) I would probably avoid to be in a big/high building and stay in my own house that hopefully has a lightning rod.

  • I think that to help the people, the government of Rwanda and the rest of the world should put lightning rods on buildings. If I lived in Rwanda and it was storming, I would stay inside unless my house was not as safe as somewhere else near by.

  • i feel like this could not have been prevented this was a freak accident metal tower might have helped lightning rod could have helped also but i feel like this was just an act of mother nature

one thing i would do is say inside because its the safest place during a storm i would also like to see how they deal with storms like how what do the natives do during a storm

  • We have lightning rods that prevent most lightning strikes from taking lives or ruining buildings. It seems like this invention would be extremely helpful for this country. If it was storming, I would get in a building that was in a valley or a low place to avoid being hit by lightning.

    • Yes, I agree with the lightning rod idea becauase like you said there are a ton of buildings around here that have lightning rods and I don't really remember when a lightning bolt striking a building and killing people and also destroying the building. Its not common.

  • I think maybe they should put up stuff to protect buildings from lightning storms. I would probably stay inside to be safe.

  • I agree that the government should put lightening rods on buildings as this could happen anytime so they need to make people safe. If I lived in Rwanda I would try to stay under a steel building during a storm.

    • I also agree with you and the idea of the lightning rods. Maybe there is another way lightning bolts could be prevented from hitting buildings. But I'm not that intelligent so I wouldn't be the one to come up with the idea. Also, I like how you  mentioned where you would go during a storm.
