Let Me Just Throw This Rock Over an Overpass!

Five teens from Michigan have been charged with second-degree murder after throwing a tire and multiple rock--one which fatally hit a man. Kenneth White was a passenger in a van that was traveling near Flint, Michigan on October 18th when a 6 pound rock smashed through the windshield. He was struck in the face and head, the rock then bounced on his chest, causing him to lose consciousness, and eventually die. The driver of the van told the Genesee Police in Michigan that he had to pass four other vehicles and maneuver around multiple rocks before he was able to pull over and get help for his buddy.

The county prosecutor announced on Monday that the 15-17 year old teens are going to be charged as adults with one count of second-degree murder each. Also, they are being charged with conspiracy to commit murder, six felony counts each of malicious destruction of property and another lesser charges. The teens will be formally tried in court on Tuesday.

Questions:

- Do you think the punishment for the crimes of these teens is too severe? Yes or no and why.

- Do you think you would ever do the same thing these teens did or would you have the common sense to do otherwise? Explain.

My Opinion:

- I think that the punishment is very fitting for the crimes these teens committed. If it was an accident I would say otherwise, but these people did this multiple times. They had to know someone would get hurt. I would not do something like this because I like to think I have the common sense to do something more valuable with my time.

  • Your summary is well done but you should have replied to all of the comments as their aren't that many.

  • No, I don't think the punishment is too harsh because they threw rocks over an overpass and ended up killing a man and putting many in danger. I would never do this because it's common sense that if you are throwing rocks over that they will potentially strike someone and cause major injuries. I honestly think they intended to hurt someone because it's just common sense to not throw rocks at oncoming cars.

  • No, I don't. I know they are legally children yet, but by that age, one knows what is right or wrong. I'm sure they didn't mean to kill someone, but it happened and you can't say, "it was just an accident" and walk away from the situation. I think I have the common sense to do something different.

  • No, because they didn't just throw one they threw multiple. I would not do this I would want to do something more enjoyable and not have to worry about killing someone or hurting someone.

    • I completely agree with you, I think that there are many other options and ways to spend your day besides throwing various objects over an overpass and having the possibility of injuring someone.
