Less Sleep Associated with Risky Behavior in Teens

A new study shows that the amount of sleep a teen gets increases or decreases their risk in engaging in suicidal or depressed behavior or just in general, unsafe/unhealthy behavior. The study also shows that it involves risk-taking factors. Examples are drunk driving, unsafe sexual activity, aggresive behavior, use of alcohol, and drugs. Studies also found the strongest in relation to mood and self-harm were kids who sleep for less than six hours per night when comparing those who get eight hours or more. Scientists advice that parents need to keep track of their child's sleeping schedule and make sure that they are getting enough sleep every night. They say that it will make a huge difference in their child's lives around the areas of performance, mood, and behavior.

How many hours of sleep do you get every night and in what ways do you think it is affecting your behavior? I get around exactly 8 hours every night and I feel okay on most days but some days I just don't even want to interact or talk to anyone because I am just not in the mood.

Do you believe that these studies are leading to risky behaviors? Why or why not? Yes and no. I think that some students do run on low sleeping hours and they still come to school and are completely fine. It depends on the person and if they are able to make appropriate decisions.

  • Great job overall! Good topic! You only commented on one day. Next time, be sure to comment on three different days.

  • I get on average eight to nine hours of sleep each night. I still feel tired, but I think I'm doing fine. Yes because brains need rest and when they don't get enough of it, they could cause people to do dumb stuff.

  • I don't. get enough sleep at night, which then makes me crabby and tired threw out the day. I agree with what hailey said no and yes i think it all depends on the person and if they can make the decision but also i agree that some because of not having enough sleep could make the wrong decisions

  • I usually get around 7 hours of sleep, but I try to get around 8-9. When I get more hours of sleep I feel better in the morning. And when I get less hours of sleep I usually feel tired in the morning. I feel that the students who get more sleeping hours are well behaved and well refreshed for the day. But yes, it all depends on the person.

  • I get around 8 hours of sleep at night, from 11:00-7:00. I believe that it keeps me able to listen and learn but sometimes I don't even feel like that is enough but I don't want to give more time to the estimated 20~ years of your life you will spend sleeping. I believe that these can lead to riskier behavior. While it may not cause depression, it could definitely make you less aware of consequences for what you will do.

  • I know that sleep is very important and without it, I will not be in a good mood. I hate feeling tired, so I always make sure that I get at least 8 hours of sleep every night or more. When I don't get enough sleep I never feel energized, so when I do I feel great.

I guess it depends on the person, like you said. Some people run on more sleep than others need to. I do think that sometimes the amount of sleep you get can affect your decisions because it can he hard to get your thoughts in order.

  • I get 8 hours of sleep every night, and I feel fine, but exhausted. However, I'm usually exhausted no matter how much sleep I get. When I'm tired, I'm less social and I keep to myself more. How much sleep a person needs to get definitely varies per person. I can't survive with 6 hours of sleep, but some people are perfectly fine with 6 hours. However, risky behaviors can probably be brought upon by lack of sleep in some kids.

  • I get about 7 hours of sleep and I think that's enough. I'm not craby or in a bad mood so I think that shows if someone gets enough sleep. I think people with depression don't sleep enough because they are thinking about their life or their problems and so they stay up longer. But if you are always in a bad mood that can lead into depression.

  • i get about 6-7 hours of sleep and i dont think afectes me because i have for the last 2-3 years so im used to it / yes because if you wake up only couple hours of sleep  than you could go to school and be very tired your not thinking right so you dont do good on your test or are craby all day and you whont have a very fun day

  • I get around 8 hours of sleep everynight and sometimes it doesn't affect my behavior but other days I just want to stay in bed and not even want to talk to people because I sometimes don't really care what they have to say I'm just not in the mood. I agree with it being yes and no because some students run really low on sleep that could be becuase they have a game or a cross country meet and then when they get home really late they still have a lot of homework to do yet so they might not get sleep they need. I also think no because it depends on the person if they can make the appropriate decisions when they only get so much sleep. Like I know people who can make the right decisions but then I also know people who can't make the right decision so it all depends on the person.
