Legalizing Marijuana

Should marijuana be legalized?

I believe that marijuana should be legalized and here’s why. It’s proven to be more beneficial to the human body than unbeneficial. Unlike marijuana, alcohol is significantly worse to consume. Alcohol is known to cause heart cancer, heart failure, liver damage, and more. The CDC states that six people die everyday from alcohol poisoning and about 88,000 people die annually due to excessive alcohol use in the United States. On the other hand, there are no recorded deaths caused by marijuana overdose.

Legalizing consumption of marijuana would also end costly enforcement of marijuana laws and free police resources. When people get arrested for the possession of marijuana, it costs the United States between $1.9 and $6.03 billion annually. It is said that legalizing marijuana would save about $7.7 and $13.7 billion dollars annually. Not only does the U.S lose billions of dollars, marijuana prohibition is a terrible waste of good police time. Every minute spent looking for substance reduces public safety.

Lastly, the government doesn’t have the right to tell adults what they are allowed to put in their own bodies.  People have the right to live their lives according to the way they choose as long as they aren’t violating the equal rights of others. After researching more about this topic, I believe it should be legal.  So, do you think the United States should legalize the consumption of marijuana outside of medical purposes? Why or Why not?

  • I believe they should legalize marijuana outside medical use. It is far safer than tobacco and other harder drugs. This would also lead to less people in prison which means less funding of those prisons and prevents over crowding. The government can also have dispenseries where it is taxed a bit higher than other things. This can put money back into the government and community and lead to better school funding and other community buildings.

    • I agree with you. Its the safest drug out of tabacco and alcohol and those are both legal.

  • I think that marijuana can be llegal for a ceartian age because if people want to consume it its their body and their choice to do it. I also dont think its a good idea because they arent using it for medical conditions only for fun or just becasue they want to which makes me think its not a good idea to illeaglize it.

  • yes i do believe it should be legal they already legalized medincal marijuana in some states of course for medical use it would be an awesome replacement for achool.

  • I believe that marijuana should be legal for any purpose, not only is it signifigantly better for you than alcohol, a legal poison, but hemp can be used to make a biodegradable plastics as well as other products.

  • I do not think that marijuana should be made legal unless it is going to be prescribed for medical purposes. Marijuana comes from the Cannabis plant, and the plant contains the chemical THC which can alter the way the brain works. Marijuana causes a high when THC acts on certain brain cell receptors. Some other effects of marijuana use are changes in mood, impaired body movement, difficulty with thinking and problem solving, and many more. People that use marijuana can easily get into a vehicle while they are impaired and are having a difficult time thinking. They could cause an accident and hurt someone in the process, and for this reason I do not feel that marijuana should be legalized. I found the effects of marijuana on drugabuse.gov.

  • I think that if the consumption of marijuana was legal outside of medical purpose it would be better, since it could give the government more control over it and it would disadvantage criminal organizations that make money out of it.  It would create legit jobs oppurtonities and it could be regulated.

  • My opinion on these subjects would be that they shouldn't be legalized outside of medical purposes. Obviously, this plant can be useful for medical purposes but legalizing a drug just because people like to consume it isn't necessarily a good idea. One reason for this is because when we make marijuana legal, everyone will have access to it and more people will consume and (eventually) become addicted and abuse it. Of course, people who like to smoke would love this idea but consuming drugs, for this reason, isn't a smart idea. I think it should continue to be legal when helping our medical field but I feel that the more people use it outside of medical purposes the more deaths there will be. Anxiety and depression rates will probably skyrocket due to this drug also. My opinion would be to continue investing in our police to keep us safe rather than saving the money and legalizing this drug.

  • there are different reasons that it should be legalized and there are some that prove it shouldn't be legalized. Marijuana can be very useful for medical use but there are some people who would take advantage of it and they could get high. the people who take advantage of it being illegal could get high and bad things could happen when they are high and they wouldn't make the best decisions.

  • I don't think it would hurt to legalize marijuana for medicinal uses. I don't think that marijuana should be legalized for everyone because it can cause harm and danger to others while one is high. Some people probably wouldn't make the best choices while under the influence of marijuana.
