Legalizing Marijuana

Should marijuana be legalized?

I believe that marijuana should be legalized and here’s why. It’s proven to be more beneficial to the human body than unbeneficial. Unlike marijuana, alcohol is significantly worse to consume. Alcohol is known to cause heart cancer, heart failure, liver damage, and more. The CDC states that six people die everyday from alcohol poisoning and about 88,000 people die annually due to excessive alcohol use in the United States. On the other hand, there are no recorded deaths caused by marijuana overdose.

Legalizing consumption of marijuana would also end costly enforcement of marijuana laws and free police resources. When people get arrested for the possession of marijuana, it costs the United States between $1.9 and $6.03 billion annually. It is said that legalizing marijuana would save about $7.7 and $13.7 billion dollars annually. Not only does the U.S lose billions of dollars, marijuana prohibition is a terrible waste of good police time. Every minute spent looking for substance reduces public safety.

Lastly, the government doesn’t have the right to tell adults what they are allowed to put in their own bodies.  People have the right to live their lives according to the way they choose as long as they aren’t violating the equal rights of others. After researching more about this topic, I believe it should be legal.  So, do you think the United States should legalize the consumption of marijuana outside of medical purposes? Why or Why not?

  • Good topic but it had already been done this semester. Anyway, your summary is well done as you explain your thoughts on the issue. You only replied three times instead of the eighteen you shlould have.

  • I agree, marijuana is safe in moderation and though it can be addicting, so can alcohol and nicotine which are both legal, regulated substances. I have personally seen the health benefits that CBD can have, it can be a very good calming agent for those with ADHD and Autism. I still think that traditional medicine is important, but CBD is very good at relaxing and relieving pain.

  • I also agree with the legalization of marijuana because it has more beneficial effects than alcohol does and alcohol is legal to consume. I don't think it's fair to put innocent people in jail just for smoking it, which is why it should be legalized.

  • I agree with the legalization of marijuana because so many people do it at this point, and as you said, its not as unhealthy as alcohol, which is legal. My main reason as to why I agree though is because so many people are incarcerated every year for smoking it, and I don't think that someone who is smoking marijuana should be put in jail for years.

  • I believe that they should legalize medical marijuana. However, I am unsure about recreational marijuana. I believe that marijuana used in recreational ways would cause many negative and positives. Some negatives include marijuana affecting the brain which can cause the user to see hallucinations and delusions along with impaired-memory and body-impaired movements. Some other effects are the user in long term often develops lung problems and high blood pressure. Some positives are marijuana can be used as a non-addictive pain killer along with helping patients with anxiety and epilepsy.

  • I think it should be allowed for medicial reasons only. It can help people with some of there medical isses. But I also think people wouldn't only use it for medical reasons they would just use it for fun. Theres not really a point of it if it's used for other reasons then just medical.

  • I don't believe legalizing marijuana would make much sense. I think they should only be used for medical purposes only. People are only going to make dumb decisions away. I think others would use this more than they should and it would get out of hand.

  • I believe that it should be allowed or be able to be used for medical purposes or reasons. This can help some people with their medical issues (if they have any) and can also allow them to relax. But you also shouldn't use it in certain conditions such as driving and other activities.

  • I think it should be allowed to be used outside of medical purposes because it would make more people just relax.  But if you were caught with marjiuana while driving you should not be able to have it because you could cause an accident and could hurt people.

  • I think marijuana should only be used for medical reasons. If it is not used for medical reasons I dont see a reason to use it. I think kids would make poor decisions if it would become legal. Lots of arguments would start about if it should really be legal or not.
