Kentucky Derby

This weekend on May 4th, the first ever disqualification was handed out in the 145 years of the Kentucky Derby. Maximum Security (the horses name) was the first horse to cross the finish line at the derby, but do to some objections from the other riders the officials reviewed the last lap of the race. Race officials concluded that Maximum Security caused some race-track infractions that caused some other riders to fall back. It took 15 minutes to declare the new winner of the Kentucky Derby to be Country House, who had 65 to 1 odds of winning. Donald Trump tweeted "The Kentucky Derby decision was not a good one. It was a rough and tumble race on a wet and sloppy track, actually, a beautiful thing to watch. Only in these days of political correctness could such an overturn occur. The best horse did NOT win the Kentucky Derby - not even close!"

Questions

1. Do you agree with Donald Trump? Do you think the officials made a bad call?

2. If you had bet money on the horse that was disqualified, how would you feel?

  • I kind of agree with Trump but i also don't. I do think a horse could of caused race track infractions but who knows if it was that horse exactly. It could of been any of the other horses that were in a high enough place like second or third. If I had bet on that horse i would be very mad because its not the horses fault that it got disqualified, its the officials who made the bad call to have the horse disqualified.

  • I don't know much about the Kentucky Derby or the rules, but I know that if there was proof of cheating by the winning horse, I would be upset and want them disqualified. If I had bet money on the disqualified horse, I would probably be dissapointed that I didn't win, but I would feel bad winning money by cheating.

  • In my opinion, I could see either sides of this. Yes the horse may have caused some race-track infractions but any other horse who could have been in the lead would've made the same infractions. It was probably due to the weather, which is someting we can't control. If I had bet money on the horse that was disqualified, I probably would have been very mad. Technically he had won, so all of the sudden him being disqualified would be infuriating.

  • I don't know a lot about the Kentucky Derby or horse-riding in general, but I think that there were probably multiple horses who made the same mistake as Maximum Security. I would feel disappointed but I wouldn't be too sad because people lose money when they bet it all the time.

  • I agree that the track was in rough shape. The officials did make a bad call, there was no way that the horse couldn't have roughed up the track. I would be very angry at the officials because the reasoning behind the disqualification sounds very opinion based and not very scientific.

  • 1. I feel like if they had 145 years of no disqualifications they are pretty chill about handing out disqualifications, so I think that it probably wasn't a bad call and that this guy was actually doing something wrong. Unless they had a bias against him I don't know why else he would be disqualified.

  • I think that the officials at the Kentucky Derby probably made a mistake, because it's not the horses fault that he messed up the track a little bit. Also Donald Trump said that the track was wet and sloppy already. I would probably be mad because it wasn't a great reason to diqualify the horse.

  • I am not sure on the rules of the Kuntucky Derby but the infractions could have been on acident. I also agree with Donald Trump and think that the officals of the Kuntucky Derby made a bad call about the race. Its not the horses fault that the other horses couldnt keep up.

I would be torqued if i had bet money on the horse that was disqualified. Im not sure on the rules but little infractions shouldnt be a big deal to the race. The owner of the horse put in the money and the time to have an amazing horse and won the Derby but he is disqualified from infractions.

  • I really think the officials made a bad call if the horse got there before the others they should win and plus they've never diqualified anyone ever so that's major. I would be sooooo mad thinking that all my money got lost when the horse I picked won.

  • I do think the officials made a bad call. There had been a lot of races before that have had interferences, but I think that Maximum Security still should have won because he was way ahead of every other horse. If I bet money on Maximum Security, I would be very angry at the decision if I watched him win and then suddenly get disqualified.
