A video recently went viral showing high school students from a catholic school in Kentucky supposedly "taunting" a local Native American beating his drum on the street in D.C. while the students were attending the annual "march for life".  A majority of these high school students were wearing MAGA (make America great again) hats, which are viewed by many as racist and offensive. However, the video only shows a clip of the encounter, which includes one of the Kentucky students even engage in an eye to eye altercation with the Native American. What the video didn't show is the students running into a group that was apart of the indigenous people march shouting racial slurs at the students. The Native American stated that he heard the high schoolers shouting racial slurs back that he said he would not release. The Native American said that his goal was to try and "diffuse the situation" and get in between the two groups. The Kentucky high school stated that they are taking appropriate actions following the situation.

Do you think that the boys were in the wrong here? Why?-

I think that the boys weren't in the wrong, however the could have diffused the situation by simply just walking away and not making a scene of it.

What would you have done if you were put in this situation?

I would have walked away even before the Native American came along, while the racial slurs were being yelled at me and would not have made that big of a scene.

  • Well done Carter! Great story choice!

  • I don't think they were in the wrong. But, they could have acted better instead of chanting back. If I were in this situation, I would just walk away. I saw this video of the high schooler staring at the Native American. I think they could have acted better.

  • I think the boys werent in the wrong but I also think they could have done something to help the situation by trying to have an actual conversation or as you said walk away. If I was put in this situation I would have tried to have a normal conversation and see where they were coming from and see if we could find a way to stop them from saying racial slurs.

  • I don't think the boys were completely wrong because they maybe did things that could be considered disrespectful to the native americans, butat the moment I don't think they realize what they were doing, and the consequences they could get. I would have also walked away from there, so I don't get in any trouble.

  • I don't think the boys were completely in the wrong they shouldn't have been doing the tomahawk chop and he didn't have to get closer to him. I would have probably back away and not stare him down especially when they had the other people yelling racial slurs at them before that.

  • I don't think they did any wrong because they were simply standing there and dancing along with the native americans. I would also walk away or just try my best to ignore them and not try and add into the mess that was already created.

  • No and yes because they were just being teenage boys but maybe the boys could have stop the whole situation by just leaving where they were and go stand somwhere else and wait for there bus. If it was me who was in that place of time I would have walked away because I would not want it to become a big situation.

  • i dont really know how to feel about this because its a touchy topic, but i think that they could have handeled it differently or just leave because they didnt have to stay there, they could have left. I would have just stayed, not because of any racial motives or anything, but because I would have liked to hear and see what he was playing.

    • I agree with you Leah, I also think that they could have handled this situation a little better and avoided a lot of uneeded drama that has since escalated into a bigger story.

  • I think that the boys could have just walked away and just avoided the native american man and just went back to whatever they were looking at and keep looking until the bus arrived. if I was put in theis situation I would have just walked away from the man.
