After weeks of intense battling for his confirmation, Justice Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed to the nation's highest court in a 50-48 vote in the senate Saturday, October 6. The vote was mostly along party lines, but one democrat and one republican voted "yes" and "no," respectively. The reason that there were only 98 votes in the senate is because republican senator Steve Daines was attending his daughter's wedding, and Lisa Murkowski, the republican who would have voted no, chose not to vote as a courtesy to Senator Daines. The confirmation of Kavanaugh has unified both sides of the aisle, with republicans uniting to come out in midterm elections, according to new polls. The democrats have also been brought together to protest the nomination of Kavanaugh from start to finish. With the battle over Kavanaugh coming to a close, it seems that conservative textualists have won out this particular nomination. Kavanaugh will begin deciding cases on Monday, and this gives the Supreme Court its first conservative majority in years. Kavanaugh is only 53, so it's likely that he will sit on the bench for 20+ years.

1. What are your thoughts on the guilt or innocence of Brett Kavanaugh when it comes to the allegations made?
There is no evidence to say anything for certain. Christine Ford, who brought the most credible allegation against Kavanaugh, had zero corroborating evidence, witnesses, or information. I believe in the concept of "innocent until proven guilty," so I believe that Kavanaugh didn't assault Dr. Ford.
2. How do you think that this affects the country as a whole, and what are your thoughts on the larger principles at stake here?
Kavanaugh being on the Supreme Court will affect the country for many years to come. Since he is a textualist, I believe that he won't use his power to push an agenda. Rather, he will interpret the Constitution to the best of his ability, which is the purpose of the Supreme Court. The principle of due process was under serious scrutiny during this confirmation process, so I am glad that he was confirmed.

Great job! Be sure to comment on three different days next time.
I think that Supreme Court, Kavanaugh, will effect the country if it is good or for worse. Like you said, he is younger, so he will probably be in the supreme court for many years. I think that many people dislike him and what he was acussed for from his history, but I feel like people change and you can't base them off of what they did years ago.
I am having trouble believing that Brett Kavanaugh did anything wrong. His accuser seems not to remember anything about what happened, except for that it allegedly happened, which doesn't mean a lot without any other evidence after 35 years. I think as long as we continue to let both sides give their story when something like this happens, we will be fine.
I haven't watched the news on this stuff enough to really pick a side, but I do think that he is innocent. I am happy to see him get the confirmation. This will really affect the country because he will be in the Supreme Court until he wants to retire or until he dies. This could swing many votes towards Republican stances.
I agree that there is no evidence to suggest that he really did anything to any girls in high school. What do you mean that he won't have as much power, though? He was confirmed to the court, so he should have equal power as any other supreme court justice.
I think there isn't enough evidence to say he is guilt or innocent. Many people have started to protest and many have got arrested. I think soon it will blow over and it won't affect the country much.
I sure hope it does blow over! With how fast the news moves, though, I'm sure people will forget all about it in less than a week. There sure are lots of protesters; some are even pounding on the doors of the supreme court building or blocking traffic.
I think that there is no evidence to say any of that happened for sure. I think it affects everyone becasue some people can't accept what is happening in our government. Some people just like to complain about stuff that happened over thirty years ago.
Nobody really knows what happened in Brett Kavanaugh's past. People will talk about what they think happened or what they have been told but only he will know the truths. I am not sure how this will effect our country yet but I am sure the effects will soon be shown in the upcoming months he is apart of the Supreme Court.
I do believe in the "innocent until proven guilty" view, but I have mixed feelings on that when it comes to this case. For a women to come forward about such a tramatic event after years of not wanting to discuss it, is truly something heroic. Especially when some 80%/90% of sexual assaults aren't reported because it's so hard for victims to speak up. I can't even imagine how much courage it had to take for Christine Ford to finally come forward and unfortunately I feel like she wasn't taken seriously like she should have been. Instead she was mocked and made fun of. Yes, Kavanaugh being elected to the Supreme Court could have major affects on the county. Republican, President Trump chose Kavanaugh as his nominee due to the fact that they share the same conservative views. Because of this the supreme court now has a majority of conservative judges which could affect court rulings for years to come.
