Kansas State Marching Band Made What on the Field?!

On September 5th, 2015, the Kansas State marching band took the field one afternoon to preform their half-time show. Little did they know that this marching band was about to go where no marching band has gone before.

The theme for Kansas State's marching band halftime show was Star Wars and Star Trek. During the show, half of the band was standing in the formation of their biggest rival's mascot, that is, the Kansas Jayhawk. While half of the band was in the shape of the Jayhawk, the other half of the band stood in the formation of a rocket ship that was supposed to be attacking the Jayhawk, or so they thought.

Depending on the angle that you watched the show, it did look like there was a rocket ship that was attacking the Jayhawk, but from most angles, it looked as though the rocket ship was the shape of a male's genitals instead. After the band preformed, the Kansas State marching band director was suspended for this major mishap. The Big Conference 12 has also charged the University $5,000 for violating its "sportsmanship and ethical conduct policies".

Questions:

Do you think that this was an accident or do you think that the student's had something to do with this?

Did the band director deserve to be suspended for this mistake on the field?

Would you be embarrassed if you were part of the band during this halftime performance?

  • Good story and well done!!

  • I think it was probably a mistake and that they shouldn't have fired the band director. It would have been hilarious

  • I think this was most likely an accident. Being in band, I know it can be tough to make all of the sets look perfect, so something like this could very possibly happen. I do not think that the director should have been suspended. He did not mean to, and everyone makes mistakes. It would probably be pretty embarrassing to be a part of the band that received so much publicity over just one stupid mistake.

  • I think it was an accident because maybe they just weren't sure on the set completely or didn't fit the form correctly. I don't he should've been suspended, but he should've been warned not to do it again. I would be embarrassed because then everyone would think that we suck and don't know how to march.

    • I agree with you Drew that maybe the band director should've been charge with a fine, but not with a suspension. I think that this could've been an accident but nobody will really know for sure.

  • I think that the students knew what it was going to look like and probably didn't want to do it, but I assume that the director didn't see it. I think that this was an accident because some one would have to be extremely stupid to think that this would be funny.

    • I agree with you Parker. I think that the director should've thought this through before he made these charts and put this performance on the field.

  • I think maybe the student's could have been a part of doing this. But then maybe it really was not meant to look like that. It might have just been a slight mess up in the performance. I think a suspension is probably okay for him at this time, but if he did not plan it, it is not fair at all. I would probably have been pretty embarrassed if I knew what the students were doing or planning. Many of the students probably had no idea what it looked like.

    • It's hard to tell if this really was an accident or not because it would make sense for the kids to come up with something like this behind the director, but they also did this to their biggest rival in college.

  • I don't think that it was an accident. I think the student planned this. I don't think that he deserve to be suspended. A warning is enough! I would be more than embarrassed. Not only for us students in the Marching Band I also would be embarrassed for the school!!
