The producers of the show, "Empire", cut Jussie Smollet from the final episodes of Empire's current season due to his arrest. Chicago police allege that Jussie Smollet paid two men $3,500 to stage an attack on him last month. Smollett had told police that on January 29 he was attacked by two people who yelled racist and homophobic slurs at him, tied a rope around his neck, and poured bleach on him. Jussie Smollett gained a lot of support from his "incident". Jussie Smollett currently faces a felony charge of disorderly conduct due to the false claim.

Questions:

1.) Do you think this would hurt the popularity of the show, Empire, and lose its fanbase?

I think this would not only hurt the show's audience, but it would also affect the African American community and the LGBT community. People actually go through hate crimes and it puts a bad name to the communities because of false claims.

2.) Do you think people will take more caution into believing future claims and incidents?

I think people will take more caution. I don't really believe anything until I see evidence when it comes to incidents like this. You never know whether it actually happened or they're just trying to get more popular.

  • Good summary and topic choice! Be sure to comment a bit more on three different days,

  • I don't think this will hurt the popularity of the show much, since he was not one of the major characters. I don't think this will make people be more cautious in the future; people will believe what they want to believe whether it is true or not. I do think that it will keep people from faking hate crime.

  • This will definetly be a wake up call for people who put in fake hate crime reports. I doubt it will affect the whole audience of Empire, as a popular show shouldn't be judged by the people who make up its cast.  People will definitely be more cautious when taking future hate crimes into consideration, because the power they hold today is just way too much.

  • I don't this would hurt the show. I think that people do these kind of things to get attention. Like he is not getting enough attention being on tv. I would hope that people take more caution before believing these actors. This is not the first story i've heard about the same situation.

  • I think that it would hurt the show more if they had kept him on it. I think the good fans of this show will continue to watch. I think people will for sure be more cautious of things they see and hear on social media.

  • It is very possible that it could hurt the popularity of the show. Some people may not like the choice that he made and stop watching it. I think that people will take caution. You never really know if the person is telling the truth, so you should be slightly hesitant to believe them unless they have proof of what went on.

    • I agree. I think people should be cautious when it comes to believing claims such as this. It doesn't mean you should degrade them and call them a liar, I just think you should just be cautious and wait for evidence.

  • I do think it could hurt the show because it is all over the news.  His fellow actors are probably mad at him and it won't be a nice place for him to work anymore. It was a stupid thing to.

Yes, I think people will be more careful about just believing accusations.

    • If I was an actor working with him, I would be really upset and I don't think I would be able to work with someone like that.

  • I think it could hurt the popularity of the show, but I think it would have hurt it more if they had kept him on. I think people will now take unneeded caution, especially on hate crimes. Most people don't lie about things like this but now people will be more concerned and it'll hurt actual victims of hate crimes.
