The current understanding of how planets and solar systems are born goes in a very specific order. Clouds of gas and dust collapse to form stars, the leftovers from a disc around the star, planets pull the leftovers together to form solid mass. However, the solar system of the dwarf star, GJ 3512, throws that understanding out the window. The dwarf star, about 30 light-years away from our system and only 12% the mass of our Sun, has a gas giant roughly the size of Jupiter in its orbit. A star of its size, according to the understanding previously mentioned, shouldn’t have enough left over material to create a planet of such size. It’s also theorized to have a second planet, and potentially had a third at one point. Scientists are still trying to figure out exactly how this is possible.

Questions:

There are so many things about space that are still a complete mystery to use. How do you feel about that?

It’s kinda sad and a bit unsettling knowing that some things we don’t know and potentially will never know. The best we can do is keep learning what we can to get the best understanding.

What do you think of this new planet? Do you think it will have anything interesting since it revolves around a dwarf star? What features do you think it will have?

There’s got to be some interesting qualities. Such as maybe it’s seasons are a bit different. It’s such a big planet for a small star, so it’s probably going to be very cold.

  • Good job replying Madison. Be very careful to no use specific lines from your source. This could be deemed plagiarism but I will let it go as it isn't as copy/paste.

  • Its pretty cool but scary to think that there are so many things about soace and the universe that we dont know about, and who knows if we ever will know what is beyond our galaxy. I think its pretty cool the a big planet like that some how formed near such a small star, who knows how many more planets like this there are

    • There actually is a belief that there is a second planet in GJ 3512's system, and it possibly used to have three. Reasearchers belief that the third planet was shot out of the star's orbit, sending it into space. I wonder how big the second planet is, seeing as the first is so huge.

  • I think it is kind of scary but also interesting to know that there  may be living things out there that we will never know of. It's crazy that Earth is less than a spec of land compared to the whole universe. I don't really think it will be anything crazy, but it's still cool to know

    • The size of the universe is insane and, yes, a bit scary. The observable universe is massive, heck the word massive alone doesn't do it justice. Not to mention that that's only what we are able to see. Just imagine what lies beyond that. Theres already so many secrects to the universe we can see, but I wonder what's farther beyond.

  • Im not really to concersend about space and what scienctist dont know about theres not that much that can hurt us besides metours and black holes if there close to us

I dont really care or have alot of interst in it I mean sense it was made out of stars there could be some cool artifacts on it or what its made out of, might be made out of some very rare material and a smaller plant than most I think

    • It's definantly not a small planet. In the summary above it states that the planet was the size of our solar systems Jupiter, the biggest planet in our system. That's crazy for it to orbit a start that's literally about a tenth of our Sun's size. You may not have too much intrest in space, but even so, an event like this seems crazy.

  • I feel very unsettled that space is very immense and extensive, because we truly won't ever know everything about space. When we think we know the basic fundementals of something in space, something like this happens, and it's all thrown out the window. I agree with you that there are probably some very interesting qualities about the new planet.

    • I agree. We won't ever know the true extent of space. We can only see so much of space (the observable universe) and there's a good chance we won't see whats beyond. All thanks to dark matter pushing the universe away from eachother.

  • I think its very interesting and kind of cool that there are so many things in the universe that we don't know anything about, and how eventually we will figure it out and keep learning new things. There must be something very unique in this planet for it to have such a big gas giant in its orbit, and I think it will be itneresting when we figure out what it is that made the star this way.
