Back in 2009, Star Trek was both a critical and financial success, and everybody saw a sequel coming, but when director J.J. Abrams (also directed Mission: Impossible III) instead signed on for Super 8, itself a big hit from this summer, the fate of Star Trek 2 was in the balance. But now the word is out: J.J. is going to direct the film, screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (also wrote Transformers 1 and 2) are working on the script, and the entire cast (with the exception of Eric Bana as the villain and possibly Leonard Nimoy as the older Spock) are also coming back. It was originally slated to be released in late June of next year, but with no ready script and no cameras rolling within a month, we will have to wait until at least Christmas of 2012, or more likely early summer of 2013. And no word yet on wether or not KAHN!!! will make an appearance.
