7-year-old girl is killed by a bouncy house

In Essex, England a bouncy castle was swept away by a gust of wind. Summer Grant was taken to a local hospital and died a multiple injuries several hours later. A 24-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter by gross negligence.

Here in the United States, there have been plenty of stories that have parents looking at these bouncy houses as less of a thril ride for children and more of a fright for parents when they consider all the scary things that can happen.

Two years ago a bounce house was swept away by a wind gust in South Glens Falls, New York, climbing as high as 20 feet and seriously injuring two boys who were playing inside.

Questions:

1 What would you do to keep the kids safe if they are playing on a bounce house?
2 Do you think the owners of the bounce house should be arrested? Why?

My opinion:
I would have someone to look at the kids playing full time just to make sure that someone is there if something like this happens. I don't think the owners of the bounce house should be arrested because it was an accident and it's not their fault.

  • Great job!

  • Well you could make sure it is a day with good weather not super windy. But there is not way for it to be completely safe. There is always something that could go wrong. They should be arrested because they didn't try and harm the kids.

  • If my kids were in one of these I would make sure it wasn't super windy that day and I would keep an eye on them and the bouncy house. I don't think they should be arrested because they didn't mean to hurt the kids, and if the bouncy house was set up correctly it's not their fault at all.

  • I would watch them the whole time and try to secure it down as best as possible. I think they shouldn't it is not their fault that happen to the child under there watch.

  • I think that I would make sure to look after the kids while they're in the bounce house, or completely not allow them to be in it if the weather is bad. I don't think the owners should be arrested, simply because this was a weather-related incident. However, if this continues to happen, I think some investigations should be done.

  • I would make sure the bounce house was secured to the ground so this wouldn't happen. I do think so if they were there. It is their responsibility to make sure it is secure.

    • I think is their responsability to make it safe but they can't control the weather.

  • I'm not exactly sure what I would do to make these safer, because they are dangerous in general and nothing can be 100% safe. I think the case needs to be looked into further before official calls and charges are made; I still think that the owners should be at least charged though and probably serve some jail time depending on what they actually did.

    • You are right, there is no way to make it 100% safe. I think they should pay some money

  • I just wouldn't allow them to play in it if the weather is not good or the bouncy house is not secured safely.

I don't think they should be, unless the bouncy house was unsafe for reason other than the wind. If it had a defect, they should be arrested but if not, this is just a tragic accident that nobody can be held accountable for.
