In recent news the original statue of the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima is being auctioned off in New York and will be expected to go for $1.8 million. The less known 12 ½ foot statue was made after the war. Around 1947 the 32 foot tall statue was built and now stands in its place.
I think that this is an interesting fact that not very many people know about.

Unless some institution like the Smithsonian buys the piece, I don't believe it should be sold. Selling history is not the smartest thing our country has ever done. Think of what the old veterans would have to say about this! The men that fought in WWII should not be "sold" like this. I guess this is just a little disturbing to me.
This would be a bad decision to sell this valuable peace of American History. As long as the money doesn't go for something stupid, they could sell it I guess.
I think that things like this should not be anyone's personal property.
That is so interesting! I think its really cool that people are doing this. It will help educated people about Iwo Jima.
Why are they going to sell this? I saw this when i went to Washington DC and it was amazing! It is huge and just amazing! I cant believe they would sell something like this that is a tribute to our country and people go visit is everyday.
When i was in DC a few summers ago i went and saw this statue and it was really cool and huge! but i dont understand why they are going to sell it..
I think as long as the money goes towards a good cause it's okay. However, you are selling apart of history.
why would they sell something that was important. I don't get people these days.
