Is Water More Dangerous than Bullets?

A study released at the world water day (March 22) highlights that dirty water is 20 times deadlier for children under 5 in conflict zones than bullets. After analyzing data from 16 countries including Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, the study showed that 3 times more children under 15 die from Diarrhoeal, a disease caused by dirty drinking water than from the war. An average of 72’000 children die every year caused by Diarrhoeal. The government in some of these countries doesn't let the people have access to clean water because they need it for the military or if another country has taken over control they won't let other people drink it.

“The reality is that there are more children who die from lack of access to safe water than by bullets. Water is a basic right. It is a necessity for life.”, says a UNICEF worker.

Do you think there is a way how we can help this situation? How?

I think there isn't really one even though it's sad. The government in these countries stops people from getting to healthy water, so we would have to overthrown it otherwise I can't see how we could help.

Are you shocked that the water kills more children than bullets do?

I am really shocked. I knew that there are countries which don't have healthy water, but I thought that the war is way worse. In my opinion it is a terrible situation that so many people die because of the war, but that so many die because of unsafe water which is against the basic human rights is even worse.

  • Very interesting study. Well done Sina!

  • They way to help the situation is to try and convince the other governments that water is the most important thing, and hope that they will take steps in getting cleaner, healthier water. No I am not shocked because very little amount of kids get shot, but lots of kids don't have access to healthy water.

  • I think that if the word was spread enough, fund raisers could be put together to raise money to buy water bottles to ship over to theses countries. I am not shocked, everyone needs water and when the supply is low then many will drink whatever they can. Even dirty water which would kill them.

  • I think that if our government works hard enough and maybe tries to reason with their government we can come up with a way that we can get clean drinking water to thoughs people and children in need of it. I guess that I am a little shoked that there are more kids killed by dirty drinking water that by bullets, but I don't really think it is a good comparasin becuase down there there government is keeping clean water from them forcing them to drink the dirty water and how many kids are going to actually be near dangerous gun fire at a regular basis.

  • Since the government won't let them have access to clean water it would be hard to get those countries fresh water. I am shocked because you would think that bullets would be more deadly than water.

    • I agree with you that because the government doesn't let them get clean water it would be even harder to help. I think that it is sad that the government prefers to let those kids die and keep having war.

  • If we can persuade the government to let us help them have clean water, then yes.

I didnt really ever imagine that kids would have a bigger death toll than military. so yes I am quite shocked about this horrible situation.

  • I think we could stop polluting water by not throwing our trash into nature. Ultimately, we really can't do much about the water only the government can take of it. I am not surprised that water kills more children than bullets do because of how much trash gets thrown into water.

    • Good point, we pollute a lot of water even though I think that isn't why they have no drinking water. They need good filter and maybe stores to buy water. I undestand your view, but I think the problem is more that the goverment wants to keep the war alive instead of the children.

  • We could send them water or maybe help them get a water filter. I am shockedthat water kills more children than bullets. You read stories of children playing outside and being shot, but this is the first where water kills kids.
