Is The Trump Administration 'Erasing' Transgenders?

The Trump Administration is debating redefining gender as an unchanging, biological condition that is decided by genitalia you have at birth. Obama's administration recognized the legal concept of gender as a choice in education and health care programs that sparked debates over bathrooms and dormitories. However, now the Department of Health and Human Services is trying to make a legal definition of sex under Title IX, which is the civil rights law banning discrimination of gender in education programs, arguing that they need to have a clearly stated definition of gender "that is grounded in science, objective, and administrable." Their definition would define sex as male or female, and is determined by the sex given at birth. Previously, the Trump Administration has tried to ban transgender people from serving in the military and challenged civil rights protections for transgenders.

Do you think gender is a person's choice or it is an assignment based on the genitals at birth? Why or why not?

Personally, I think gender is a person's choice. If the person wants to be transgender, then let them. It's their life, and they get to live it however they want to (as long as they aren't doing anything illegal). Them being transgender doesn't hurt anyone, so I think the person gets to decide who and what they want to be.

What are your thoughts on the Trump Administration trying to redefine gender?

I think the Trump Administration trying to redefine gender is wrong and unfair, and should be stopped or changed. Transgenders are people too, and this proposal basically ignores them altogether. They should either look over and revise what they wrote, or completely scrap it.

  • Good topic choice and well done Evan!

  • I think that a person's gender is assigned at birth and its not that I don't think that people shouldn't be able to state what they think that they are, but the scientific community shouldn't have to go along with it if it doesn't actually make sense.

    • I have to disagree with you. People should be allowed to choose wat gender they want to be. Also, the scientific community has actually conducted many studies showing that being transgender is actually something you can be, and not just people wanting to change genders for the fun of it. For example, one study showed that identical twins (same genes) were most often both transgender, while fraternal twins (sharing half of their genes) weren't, showing that genetic background may affect gender identity. Another showed that male-to-female transgenders had a part of their brain (that can be used to determine if the brain comes from a female or a male) that was shown to be similar in size and cell density to cisgender females and vice versa..

  • I think it could be both. You are stated to be whatever gender you were born as at birth, but if you choose to switch genders later in life, then you should be able to legally change your gender to that. You should be able to decide what gender you want to be if you feel like you need to. I don't think the Trump Administration should be redefining gender because these are just people trying to be who they truly feel they are. The Administration needs to get rid of this idea altogether.

    • I completely agree with you. If you want to transition to a different gender and it will make you happy and feel like yourself, then you totally should be able to. Them switching isn't hurting anyone, so why shouldn't they be able to? The Trump Administration doing this is unfair, and disregarding the 1.4 million transgenders in the United States. Transgender rights are people rights.

  • I think that you can't just choose your gender because you feel like it's just what your born as

I think even though that people should just stay as the gender their born as I don't think he needss to use force to change it

    • I think you should be allowed to choose your gender, because otherwise they could not be happy, and might be suffering. The only thing I could think of that might be a bad reason to let them switch would be the whole "should they be allowed to use the bathroom they want" controversy. Most people wouldn't want someone that was born a boy in the girls bathroom and vice versa.

  • I think that gender should be kept as the way a person is born at birth, in my opinion, everyone should be happy with who they are wherever they are. I think that Trump should keep doing what he is doing, the assignment of birth should be kept the same all through a persons' life.

    • I disagree. If a person wants to be the other gender, then let them. It isn't hurting anyone, and not allowing them to be something they feel like they are could ruin their life (because they can't be who they actually are). Not allowing them to switch would be limiting their happiness, and they couldn't be happy with who they are.

  • I think its assigend at bith and thats what you have to follow for sighing up for thing, applications etc. I belive that their is only 2 genders not 1000 of made up ones, but also you should put what where assign at birth for things because it can help with things.

I feel pretty neutral about it. I don't really care if he does or not it doesn't effect me.
