Is the ocean safe to swim in?

Have you ever swam in an ocean and thought, “Is it REALLY safe to be swimming in the ocean”? I’ve thought about it recently so I’ve researched it. A lot of the time people are afraid of the marine life injuring swimmers, but most of the time, it isn’t the marine life that causes injury. The Marine life is more afraid of you, than you are of them. The only way marine life would attack, is if they feel threatened. There are about 47 shark attacks yearly and only 1 fatal.

If it isn’t the Marine life injuring swimmers, what might it be? Well, there are many ways that humans can be injured while swimming in the ocean. Rough seas, weak swimmers, ocean currents, wrong apparel, etc, are all a part of ways swimmers can be injured. Wrong apparel could cause you to be thought of as food that attracts fish and sharks. If a current sweeps from under your feet and you don’t know the proper way to escape, it could lead to drowning. Especially if you are a weak swimmer, you probably shouldn’t travel too far into the ocean. There are also other ways humans can be injured in the ocean such as bacteria. Research shows that your skin microbiome is changed after you swim in an ocean. Ocean water washes off normal skin bacteria but also deposits foreign bacteria that could be dangerous onto the skin.

I believe that some of these dangerous things that could happen to you in the ocean could easily be prevented. I personally think that the ocean is generally safe to swim in as long as you are careful and aware of your surroundings. I feel like if you are educated enough about situations that could appear while swimming in the ocean, then you are okay.

Do you think swimming in the ocean is safe?

  • Good and unique topic choice(+5) Alivia! You did a great job replying to students and your summary is well done overall. I would like it to be a tad longer-talk about numbers of people killed/injured in the ocean ever year and what are the causes.

  • I have swam in the ocean and I took in an entire mouthfull of sea water, would not recomend opening your mouth under water. I think if you know what you are doing and can swim pretty good, than you should'nt have to worry about danger while swimming in the ocean.

  • I think swimming in the ocean is safe as long as your careful and know what your doing because it could be dangerous. I think if you know your not a good swimmer than you should not be swimming out into the ocean to far just incase because of currents. I have never been to an ocean but I do want to sometime soon.

  • I personally have never swam in the ocean but I think I if you do swim in the ocean you are in a group just to be safe.

  • I overall think oceans are safe to swim in. While I think they are safe to swim in I think there are precautions that need to be taken. Adults need to watch the children that are around and keep a close eye on their kids. Parents should also educate their kids on what to do in emergencys and how to call for help if needed.

  • I feel that swimming in the ocean is safe although there are some freak accidents once in a blue moon. Personally, I have never swam in the ocean but I do understand why people would be scared to do so, I think it's safe though.

  • I have been to the ocean many times when traveling to different parts of the world and all around the united states and I believe that it is safe to swim ot just be in in general. I love the ocean and I feel that if should be something for everyone to see.

    • I agree that it should be something for everyone to experience. I think the ocean over all is safe only if you are cautious and a good swimmer.

  • I think it is mostly safe to swim in the ocean besides you get attacked by some animal or get out too far. There is small chance to get bitten by a shark. I think the most scary thing in the ocean is when you get pulled into the ocean and you can do nothing.

  • I personally believe that the ocean is safe and can be a blast. When in the ocean and having fun you have to safe and careful of everything around you. I have swam in the ocean multiple times and it is a memory I will alway rember.
