Is Social Media BAD for you?

Social media started blowing up in the early 2000’s. It has had many positive effects for people and businesses although there are downsides to it as well. The GlobalWebIndex implies that “people ages 16 to 24 spent an average of 3 hours and 1 minute using social media each day”. Social media is something that is becoming necessary to have in this day and age. It is a huge part of people's lives and is something that cannot always be avoided. 

Social media has many advantages. It is a way to keep in touch with the world and friends. When feeling alone, it can be a way to reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and more. Social media can trigger hormones to ease these things. It can also be a fun way to express yourself and show what you are up to. Social media can be effective for businesses in marketing as well. 

On the other hand, social media can have a negative impact on mental health. In fact, according to a report in JAMA Psychiatry, it explains how using social media more than 3 hours a day can create more risk for mental health problems. When spending too much time on it, social media can create a distance from the real world. This can cause an individual to feel alone and isolated which can then lead to suicidal thoughts. Social media can also be a toxic place to compare yourself to others and have FOMO(Fear of missing out). 

Overall, I think that social media has more of a negative effect on individuals when spending too much time on it. The fact that most people spend over three hours a day on just social media makes it seem obvious that it has an effect on mental health. Personally, when I spend too much time on social media, I can feel more stressed. It creates a way for me  to procrastinate and get distracted.

  • I think social media is positive for the most part however there are some exceptions to my statement. Social media can be a terrible place for example the black market or dark web is all located on online platforms. 

  • I think that social media is a positive thing. Social media can help you talk to your friends and find information you need. Social media helps people stay informed on what is going on in  the world. I probably spend more time than I need to on social media. When it comes to social media people also have to act responsibly when it comes to what they post. I think social media for the most part affects me in a positive way.

  • For me personally, social media is more positive than negative. Its a great tool to use in order to keep touch with friends, family, and the rest of the world. At the same time, because people can post whatever they want onto social media, many negative things can come out of using social media. From comparing yourself to the beauty standards that are portrayed on social media, to downright bullying, social media can become very negative. The amount of time I spend on social media differs from day to day. It depends whether or not I'm busy and have other things I need to do. Even then, sometimes I end up procrastinating and waste time on social media. 

  • I believe that there are both pros and cons to social media. I think that there are so many useful things from social media, such as keeping up with recent news and problems. I think that with social media must come a maturity level. If someone is not mature or old enough for social media it could do harm to the person and have a negative impact on them. For me personally, I think it is maily positive affects on me.

  • I think that social media is both positive and negitive. It's postive because like you said it's a good way for communication, but it's negitive because it can lead to alot of mental illnesses. On avargae I probably spend about 3 hours a day during the weekdays on social media. Personally social media for me has more of a postive affect rather then negitive.

  • I think that social media is good because it gives people something to do and brings people together. I dont spend much time on social media. I think that social media is definetly a positive thing. However I could see how too much social media could be negative.

  • I think that social media is good for most people out there but there can always be down sides to it. I think it more affects me in a good way because social media lets me know more about what is going on in the world. 

  • I honestly don't really think their is an inbetween with social media being more positive or more negative, and it just has to do with it changing every single day, or even with say every TikTok you watch. There could be one TikTok saying bodyshaming is not okay or something, and then the next TikTok could be someone bodyshaming someone. So, there really is no inbetween with it being positive or negative. I do spend quite a lot of time on social media, and that it does have both a negative and positive affect on me. 

  • i think that social media is a more positive thing then it is a negative thing. There are many advanatges to social media. its is a nether way to talk to friends and keep in tuch with what is going on. i think social media affects me in a good way. i do not spend all that much time on my phone.
